A game ahead of its time and that laid the foundations of FPS. Bond, James Bond is back. Building his reputation as a legend within the industry with the game that marked a before and after. Maybe the Xbox version lack about online multiplayer and it does not reach 60 fps but it's still Goldeneye 007 one of the best FPS of the 90's and everyone has to try it at least once.

As a history lesson in how things used to be done, and as a split-screen multiplayer game, GoldenEye 007 still delivers the goods where it counts, although certain aspects haven't aged as gracefully as you would hope. Its precision aiming mechanic is fiddly and ever so slightly impractical on any controller that isn't the original (and divisive) N64 pad, and - as with most 64-bit titles, to be fair - an old-style CRT is much more flattering on its visuals than today's HD displays. However, play for a while and you'll quickly find evidence of the subtly profound design that made this such a game-changer back in 1997. GoldenEye represents an instance of genuine innovation in the first-person shooter genre, and its brilliant local multiplayer reminds us that there's still nothing quite like gloating and showboating with three friends all crowded around a single screen.

It’s good to see you again, Mr. Bond. After more than 25 years, GoldenEye 007 has still got the same magic that made it such a seismic event upon its release in 1997. This Xbox version might be missing online multiplayer and cheat codes, but don’t let that put you off. It’s still utterly wonderful.

This is still the GoldenEye you have loved for the past twenty-five years, with just enough quality of life improvements to make it feel at home in a modern console. It runs well (though not at 60fps), its new controller scheme is a godsend, and the godlike soundtrack remains intact. It’s more than just nostalgia bait: as a shooter made in a time when console shooters weren’t a thing, it has aged surprisingly well in most aspects besides its visuals. I love that I can finally play this on a modern system, with a decent controller, for the foreseeable future.

I recommend giving GoldenEye a go, whether you’re a grizzled veteran of the ’90s or a newcomer to this retro FPS classic. It still holds up a lot better than you might expect — and if you have the opportunity to get three friends together for some multiplayer, you can learn what true joy really is.
