The whole thing is a delight, and one of the more interesting takes on the deckbuilding roguelike genre I've played since Monster Train, which is apt, because it definitely takes some inspiration from that game. This is one of those games I'll be playing for months and possibly years to come, because it just feels good when you finally get a strong run going. However, the difficulty may put off some players. I recommend pushing through and fighting for those small successes, and those that do so will be rewarded by one of the best indie games of 2023 so far.

Wildfrost takes the core ideas of the very popular card-driven genre and makes enough changes to add freshness to it. It does take some time to unlock all the town buildings and the three tribes that can provide leaders and cards. But once that happens, the game offers a wide range of tactical options and it’s fun to discover how various combinations will perform against the capable bosses.

Small touches like these elevate Wildfrost into the upper tiers of the genre, even while its generally lighter range of content may steer potential buyers away. Once its best qualities come into view, though, that familiar roguelite deckbuilder addiction takes hold to reveal considerable potential, with dozens of encouraging RNG-fueled synergies, lucky accidents which breathe life into additional playthroughs. Wildfrost might seem a bit bare-bones, but each of its moving parts feels precision-engineered, making for an impressive entry into the genre for the studio and a great value for its asking price.

Wildfrost is a rogue-lite deck builder about trying to save a city from an eternal winter. In the game, I had to select between different cards to add to my deck while trying to take out enemies and survive the frigid climate. Did the adventure warm my heart? Find out in this Rapid Review.

Are the complaints reason enough to avoid Wildfrost though? Nah, it’s really great. Yes, it will occasionally kick you in the shins, and like all games of this type, it’s charms will last about as long as it takes for you to ‘solve’ the game and beat it. Developers Deadpan Games and Gaziter have put together all the right ingredients for a stellar roguelike-deck-building experience, and if you’re a fan of the genre or interested in seeing what the fuss is about then Wildfrost is certainly worth a look. It’s pretty cool (ICE JOKE!)

Wildfrost is an enthralling roguelike deckbuilder that’ll keep players hooked in with its satisfyingly strategic gameplay – just expect to suffer a lot of deaths when playing. Yep, the difficulty can be unpredictable (and a little harsh) at times, but at least it doesn’t stop the game from being a ton of fun to play. With a real sense of progress when building up your home hub and earning upgrades, plenty of different decks and cards to play with, and a rewarding gameplay loop that’ll have you constantly repeating the phrase ‘one more go’, there’s PLENTY for deckbuilding fans to enjoy in Wildfrost.

Overall, Wildfrost is an incredibly well-designed gameplay experience that is sure to delight. Through its dynamic attack counter system, combined with features like charms, encounters, and randomised hero stats, the gameplay feels as dynamic and challenging on the twentieth run as it does on the very first one. Great roguelike card game, this Wildfrost. Of course it is not as cute and cuddly as it may seem at first glance, the art style is deceiving while the gameplay, with its inexorable countdown and perfectible balance, does not forgive the slightest mistake. It takes patience to give it a chance to fuel and a little stubbornness to get the best out of it, but it's definitely worth it.

Wildfrost is a charismatic and immersive deck-building adventure. The battles, which mix cards, turn handling and positioning, are exciting and full of interesting nuances. There is a good variety of cards, allies and powers, which makes it fun to explore tactical possibilities and build synergies. Chaos and unpredictability are constant in the runs, making the clashes intense and difficult, constantly forcing us to improvise. However, these are also the game's biggest flaws: it's common to end up in seemingly impossible or unfair situations. Also, the content is somewhat limited, however, future updates may alleviate these issues. With inventive combat and a captivating universe, Wildfrost is for those looking for a slightly different card roguelike, you just have to be prepared to face its challenges.

Wildfrost is definitely worth investing in if you enjoy deck-building games. However, I wouldn't recommend it for those unfamiliar with the genre. It's too difficult for inexperienced players and could ruin a newcomer's interest. However, if you are looking for a challenging card game, Wildfrost is the perfect candidate for you. There's a lot to love about this game, and I hope that it gains popularity outside of just the deck-building community.

It’s a game with charm, gorgeous art, and soothing music, making jumping into the action extremely enjoyable. The strategy becomes even more delightful when you dive into it, slowly peeling back seemingly simple layers to show a more complex nature underneath it. A lot is going on in Wildfrost, but it never overwhelms you, and it’s easy to find yourself lost in it for hours as you carve the path forward for your tribe.
