Protodroid DeLTA shows us just how fun a 3D Mega Man inspired game can be, and had me dodging lasers and grinning from start to finish.

Protodroid DeLTA is one of those game that may be technically competent when it comes to areas like graphics, music and basic gameplay, but it suffers from not having an original bone in its body.

Protodroid DeLTA is a challenging 3D platformer heavily influenced by the Mega Man X series. The game offers a variety of cool stages to choose from and presents crazy enemies to fight, but the jumps and enemy placement can feel unfair at times.

As a long-time fan of all things Mega Man, I'm thoroughly impressed with what Protodroid DeLTA has to offer; I highly recommend it.

Seemingly made by a single person, Protodroid DeLTA is a riveting action platformer clearly inspired by the Mega Man franchise, but easily able to stand as its own title. Brilliant level design and mechanics pair with impressive writing to deliver a title that's difficult without being frustrating. At roughly 6 hours, it doesn't overstay its welcome and raises hopes for future titles from the developer.

Nostalgic gamers and people dying to play something resemblign a new 3D Mega Man are still bound to have a pretty fun time with Protodroid DeLTA, and here’s hoping that the title can be successful enough to warrant a sequel that fixes some of its shortcomings.

Protodroid DeLTA is a slick action-platformer that is a whole lotta fun to play through thanks to some great level design and slick combat. And sure, it might wear its Mega Man inspirations like a big badge of honour, but it also does plenty of its own little things to show that it hasn’t borrowed EVERYTHING from Capcom’s beloved series. It’s just a really cool experience, and one that reminded me a lot of the joyful early days of 3D platforming (and I mean that in the best way possible).

With its inspirations clearly on its sleeve, this 3D platformer/shooter has some ambition but struggles with execution

In many ways, Protodroid Delta reminds me of Mighty No. 9. I can see where Mega Man X influenced Protodroid Delta, but it takes some of the franchise's worse parts without offering many improvements. The floaty controls will put some off, and others will have unintended glitches or weak art direction, in addition to the other things mentioned. For these reasons, it will probably appeal to fans of Mega Man X, itching for a new experience, but likely not anyone else.

Protodroid DeLTA don't try to hide that it's based entirely on Mega Man, but that doesn't mean it's lazy. The good sequences of challenges make it ideal for those who missed the genre.

Although it has a lot of rough spots such as uninspired bosses, “basic” visuals to certain effects and geometry, Protodroid DeLTA outshines in the gameplay department. It feels wonderful to control, it’s extremely fun to play and features some great level design. It might not be the Mega Man inspired platformer that some people were expecting, but it sure is one heck of a great game. Just be careful to not end up playing the same level over and over again to find out the best route. Or do and enjoy the ride – I sure did.
