Albion Online certainly requires a specific mindset to be enjoyed. That mindset is, indeed, very different from those required in theme park MMOs, mostly because Albion doesn’t hold your hand, nor does it give you a guaranteed tree to chop, a quick way to get back home or a story to follow.

This is a game that you can play on older machines and still be enjoyed. It's also one that really manages to break free of the typical amusement park feel, ultimately allowing you to write your own story. It's great concept, and it's one that very few MMORPGs have taken up. If you're looking for something a little different that allows you to play your way, then Albion is definitely for you. That is, however, if you can handle the isometric view and the brutal PvP.

Albion Online is fun sandbox adventure game with complexity but some UI issues.  If you can make your own story and don't need a quest line to follow, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this if you're into MMORPGs where you chart your own destiny.  While there are a few interesting ideas here, there's nothing that will shatter your expectations, but that doesn't stop it from being a pretty good game overall.

Albion Online is a MMORPG that requires an idea on how to play it. Sandbox Interactive has made a game with lots of possibilities but the trick is to learn how to use them. It doesn’t show you how, it throws you into some very deep and muddy waters and makes you figure it out.

Overall, I had a lot more fun in Albion Online than I would have expected because I generally don't enjoy sandbox games a whole lot. They seem to have struck a wonderful balance between pointing player towards activities and letting them wander and find adventures on their own.

The combat is fairly enjoyable, and the PvP aspect of the game is likely its greatest asset.

Albion Online is a fun sandbox MMORPG with a clever progression mechanic and deep player-economy. The mid to late game grind and hardcore nature might turn away anyone looking for a more casual experience.

Albion Online is taking some new, innovative approaches to some of the tired, established traditions of the MMO genre. Top-down and low poly, Albion Online can be played on computers and mobile devices. With a player-driven economy and a focus on PVP and risk vs reward gameplay, the world of Albion is incredibly fluid. A unique gear focused, class-free system encourages unique and surprising equipment combinations. Dungeons may be boring, but there are plenty of other ways make your mark and either earn or steal a fortune in the world of Albion Online.

At a time when the definition of the MMO genre has been challenged by the allure of mainstream success, Albion Online has arrived to remind us how deep and compelling massively online worlds can be. It might not have the lively gameplay of its peers, nor the visual spectacle, but it makes up for most of its shortcomings by prioritizing community and presence as vital elements of the game structure.
