Mega Man Legacy Collection is, at its core, a competent collection of six classic titles that every platforming fan - or, indeed, every gamer - should play at some point. However, it doesn't go much further than that. It's a shame that a character with such a lengthy history doesn't quite get that honoured in this package, and while it's a great jumping-on point for those unfamiliar with the Blue Bomber's origins, long-time fans will find little to celebrate here.

Mega Man Legacy Collection feels incomplete, even at the relatively low asking price. You get the first six titles that form the basis of the Mega Man Legacy (which is apt, given the compilation's name) but other than an entertaining challenge mode, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of love shown to the franchise here.

With unforgiving difficulty, it's ultimately an experience that only hardcore fans will enjoy. Add in Capcom's unwillingness to make this collection best-suited for the 3DS and you have a half-dozen games mushed together on one cart with no redeemable qualities aside from the Challenge Mode and Music Player.

As retro compilations go this is very good, with pixel perfect emulation and some useful bonus features. But only existing fans will feel the games justify the effort.

If you're a hardcore fan of the Blue Bomber and don't otherwise have access to the games, the Mega Man Legacy Collection is a convenient way to replay these Capcom classics, but as a collection, it doesn't compare to Rare Replay or even the last-gen SEGA Vintage Collection games that were put together by M2.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is solid, and Digital Eclipse has done a commendable job of making these NES titles playable on modern hardware, but as a modern collection, it's woefully incomplete no matter how you slice it.

Mega Man Legacy Collection brings together all the main games in one pack and we're glad about that, but it's true that it's a bit of a vague compilation and the amount of extra content isn't enough to jump right in. Still, it's a great opportunity to learn about the beginnings of this character and to recall a piece of video game history.

While there's no reason to choose Mega Man Legacy Collection over Mega Man Anniversary Collection, there is plenty of content here for anyone who can't easily enjoy the latter again, and the games themselves are as fantastic as they've ever been. The extraneous Challenges are nice additions, but they aren't appealing enough to carry Mega Man Legacy Collection.

Overall, Mega Man Legacy Collection is a release that long term fans of the little blue robot will absolutely adore despite the odd hiccup, thanks to the faithful representation of the games on offer and the myriad of extras included in the package.

Series fans will find a lot to enjoy with these Collections, even though the games have aged worse than they may remember. Newcomers, on the other hand, may be left wondering what the big deal was with these games to begin with.

Still holding up after nearly 30 years, and still, every bit as challenging, Mega Man Legacy Collection is a great buy for the asking price. Even if it is a bit insecure with extra features.

If these variables aren't enough to deter you, then these collections are a welcome addition to any Switch library. They are an affordable taste of one of gaming's most iconic mascots, offering hours of gameplay, extensive bonus content and challenges, and flexibility to be played either as they were, or as you would like it.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is an invitation to explore the first six Mega Man games and it succeeds at striking a chord both with longtime Mega Man fans and with those less familiar with the series. As good as this compilation is, it could only be improved by fixing frame rate drops in certain busy areas and with more content, especially more games of the Mega Man series which could have easily been included in this title.

Mega Man Legacy Collection for Nintendo 3DS is still a faithful port of six classic Blue Bomber adventures, but the lack of system-specific features and limited options in comparison to its home console brethren make it hard to recommend over previous releases.

It's six Mega Man games and something that takes all those games to create a far more interesting prospect. Mega Man fans deserve better than this, but it's the best they're apparently getting, and it's pretty good for what it is.

While not an essential purchase by any means, this is a fine collection that's worth a shot if you're curious, or are looking for an excuse to revisit these titles.

As such, Mega Man Legacy Collection feels incomplete. It doesn't feature any of the games that launched after the heyday of the NES era and even then brings them to modern systems with performance warts and all. Yet somehow with the six games it does bring to the table, it provides enough for fans to indulge in with challenges and archive artwork, while also bringing in new players with conveniences such as the save system.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is a fascinating peek into the 8-bit roots of one of gaming's most beloved franchises', but it can be unforgiving for a modern audience.

Mega Man Legacy Collection on the 3DS is a great collection of games and extras, but players who already have the Virtual Console games might be hard pressed to spend $30 on 54 challenges that have little replayability without any online functionality and leaderboards.
