Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus has plenty of charm, but with that charm comes equal measures of frustration and irritation.

"Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus" harkens back to a time when pixels ruled and handholding was minimal. For some, that might make the game a frustrating and difficult slog. For others, however, it will feel more like a much welcome blast from the video gaming past.

Aesthetically, Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus is a beautifully crafted undertaking. While the sprawling maps are gorgeous, the level design falls a bit short from a purely gameplay standpoint, and the combat, while well executed, doesn't really add much to the core exploration. It's missing a few seams, but overall it's a very well put together adventure. Even with its flaws, it's definitely one fantastical adventure, and one that's absolutely worth playing.

Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus is a somewhat satisfying puzzle platforming adventure game. Its puzzles are sometimes smart and the use of music to figure those puzzles out is interesting. The gorgeous retro-inspired pixel art gives the game life, and hints at a wonderful fantasy world that's light on story but big on adventuring. What it's not is a great action game. It falls short of being more highly rated due to a combat system that interrupts the flow of gameplay, and lots of backtracking from dungeon to dungeon can make the game feel slow and tedious in spots. There are also issues with glitches to be mindful of which can truly hinder the enjoyment of the game.Overall this is still worth consideration despite its flaws, even if they deprive this one of its full potential.

Overall, Chronicles of Teddy is a pretty cool game. The reward of discovery is well worth the trip, and with some tweaks here and there, Chronicles of Teddy could have been one of the best releases of 2016. As it stands, it is still a gorgeous title worthy of your time.

Yet, these are minor complaints about a game that really is a sublime throwback to 2D adventure games of yesteryear, and they aren't big enough problems to spoil this charming game.

Truthfully, anyone who has read this review will probably have a better time than I with Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus just by the pure virtue of having an explanation of the Musicom system.

Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus might be labeled "just another indie game" by cynical gamers before they even get a chance to see what it has to offer, and that's a huge shame. This is a huge, gorgeous adventure by any reasonable standards, and while retro gamers will probably get a kick out of it more than anyone, it's not content to rest on its laurels and exploit nostalgia. For every way it recalls classic titles like Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Teddy doles out a few original ideas of its own. Excellent level design, a number of fun-to-use items and the creative "Musicom" system, which lets you communicate with NPCs using music, prove that LookAtMyGame's wonderful little indie goes beyond its inspiration. If you can put up with some irritation at the outset, including some frustratingly limited combat, you'll watch this adventure blossom into something truly special. It's one of the coolest indies so far this year.

Never before has metroidvania delved so deep into music and language to create a mellifluous exploration game like Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus. Even though I hope I learn some kind of new battle ability that will spice up the battles, the fire is present in a vast array of puzzles and platforming. The game also has a sense of humor. One of my favorite moments was figuring out what to say to a forest guardian that wouldn't let me pass. I tried many different combinations, all of which ended up enraging him to the point of killing me (video way above). When I found out that I simply had to say "please" when asking to pass, I couldn't help but shake my head and laugh.

One cannot simply pass them up as backgrounds because most of them carry hints as to how to unlock doors that will help you progress to the next level. The music and effects are simple yet very effective. Considering that there is a heavy musical component to this game because of the Musicom, the sound effects and musical scoring are non-obtrusive. The variations in every stage sets a mood and ambiance that immerses you in the game in a very charming and magical way.
