Dirt Rally is an challenging simulation of an underrepresented sub-genre of racing games and it's not for everyone. But if you're one of the few who are craving a game beyond that is different from the typical offerings, you'll find yourself right at home off the beaten track.

If you're a hardcore rally racing fan then DiRT Rally is the best game that Codemasters has made. That said, it doesn't do a great job of helping new players get into the hang of things, which is very disappointing.

DiRT Rally carefully simulates the endurance of rally and offers a brutal driving experience that builds satisfaction through vehicle and track mastery.

The best thing about Dirt Rally, really, is that it strips away all the unnecessary hipness and attitude from the previous titles, and steps out from the shadow of the Colin McRae games that it evolved from.

At times, DiRT Rally can be quite the humbling experience. There's a good chance that casual drivers might crumble at the first hurdle, but perseverance brings with it a sense of reward that just can't be found by playing the likes of Need for Speed, etc. Victory is well earned, mistakes are swiftly punished - there's no middle ground. It is video game driving in its purest form, and much like the competition it emulates so well, it can be brutal at times. Motorsport fans will appreciate the lengths that Codemasters has striven towards, ensuring it's as authentic an off-road experience as is currently possible to achieve on a home console.

DiRT Rally is an excellent game that has a fairly high barrier of entry due to its uncompromising control scheme and challenging style of play. Some better race training could have really helped to offset this difficulty, and is one of the few areas where this title missed a golden opportunity for its players. The end result is a game that can be difficult to get the hang of, but also provides a great sense of accomplishment than most racing titles once you do learn how to race the way it wants you to.

Shorn of gymkhanas, energy drinks and blaring angst rock, Dirt Rally is the simulation racer fans of the sport have been waiting for. Don't let the name fool you, this is not a Dirt sequel in any shape or form, this is the return of a breed of rally racer we thought was long forgotten.

DiRT Rally isn’t a game of player vs competitor, but a trial by fire as the battle between driver and machine rages on throughout a punishing gameplay experience that is as much frustrating as it is rewarding as you improve your driving skills over time. But as immersive as the game is when it comes to its core gameplay, the setup of the game when it comes to the career mode and the limited scale make DiRT Rally more of a side-stop, albeit one that shows great promise for the future of the franchise.

DiRT Rally is an unforgiving, temperamental beast at times. But it's also the very best game in a genre that has been brought back to its purist roots with style and love.

DiRT Rally is a game that probably won't appeal to a lot of casual gamers. Dirt Rally really feels like it's been made for that core audience that loves realistic racing games like Gran Turismo.

If you've got the time and patience to overcome its seemingly impenetrable exterior, then Dirt Rally is a thrilling racing game that's best in its class. This is a game where satisfaction can be had with a podium finish and one where you'll feel a true sense of pride and joy for every hard-earned victory... as rare as they may be.

After enjoying almost a year of Early Access on PC, the final release is now available on PS4 and Xbox One, complete with a few dozen of history's most iconic cars from over 50-years of rally, a smattering of tracks from some of the world's most beautiful point-to-point hotspots. It's an impressive return to form; an intense, hardcore recreation of rally with an emphasis on careful trial and error rather than race and rewind.

DiRT Rally, then, isn't a true successor to the DiRT series you might know and love, but it's a better rally experience if you're willing to put in the work.

Dirt Rally gets Codemasters back to their roots, with a game that focuses on rallying through and through. It's tough and unforgiving of your mistakes, but that's what rallying is about and it makes getting to grips with the car's handling, measuring your approach to a stage and coming out on top all the more satisfying.
