FIFA is built on a bedrock of design decisions that have become geologic in their permanence, and as unconsidered as the ground we walk on. I hope one day they get rid of all the shit underfoot.

In the end though FIFA 15 is all about the spectacle, and on that it delivers and then some. It feels like an epic Super Sunday clash and whether it's a 0-0 draw or a 5-4 spectacular it always feel a nail-biting, unpredictable, and tense experience that replicates all of the emotions of the beautiful game.

The inherit problem with FIFA 15 is not every moment in football is a cup final. Often it is standing in the rain, watching the players you call by their first names at the tail end of 3-nil drubbing, knowing you're going to do it all again next week. We can hope that next season, EA Canada continues to iterate, and strikes a balance between footballing glamour and realizing the beauty and passion of mid-table obscurity, because all football fans deserve the chance to experience a real simulation of the game we love.

If you love rich and complex management sims with almost unnecessary levels of detail, then you might want to pass on this; look towards the terrific Excel-spread-sheet-imitating Football Manager series instead. But, if you want to feel like your favourite footballers playing the beautiful game—or can't wait for football season and need to play-watch an almost-real match to scratch that itch—then FIFA 15 is the most visually impressive and functionally satisfying football experience out there. Y'know, apart from maybe being a football superstar.

EA has added several small enhancements to FIFA 15 that improves the look and feel of the game, but some minor annoyances still linger.

Simply because the World Cup is mentioned in this year's installment, I'd say add this to your collection, but if you're neck deep in collected items from last year's title, sticking with the old might not be a bad idea.

With plenty of features, beautiful graphics and gameplay that is so solid it can turn you into a fan of the sport, "FIFA 15" continues its run as the best EA series and is easily the best sports game of 2014. Regardless of your affinity for soccer, "FIFA 15" manages to create passion and drama on the pitch that never feels flat.

While EA Sports luxuriate in Ultimate Team wealth and licensing heaven, they're doing the bare minimum to maintain the series' technical aspects. FIFA 15 still plays decent football, but with the same (increasingly inexcusable) bugs and instabilities of the past few seasons.

FIFA 15's EPL influence runs deeper than its new matchday presentation; it's also a faster, more attacking game.

FIFA 15's improvements don't jump out right away, but they rapidly manifest themselves in smarter teammates, livelier stadiums, and more tactical gameplay. Beyond that, FIFA 15 is still a remarkably polished and complete experience, boasting excellent career modes and a variety of touches like Seasons mode and Match Day Live that remain unmatched by other sports sims. NBA 2K may yet challenge it for supremacy, but for now, FIFA remains the best all-around sports sim on the market.

For real FIFA fans, you'll want this latest update not just for all of the new content, but also for the finer adjustments and improved goalkeeper AI. For more casual fans however, there might not be enough glaringly obvious updates from last year's edition to do a Mexican wave for.

And that's the lasting impression you're left with. That while there is a solid football game underneath, the game is so riddled with bugs that it's hard to recommend the game in its current state. And if the demo is anything to go by then Pro Evolution Soccer looks to finally be ready to challenge for the crown once again.

It's not perfect, but FIFA 15 is the most exciting FIFA for a couple of years. A drift away from realistic defence towards more aggressive forward play replaces stolid midfield battles with end-to-end drama, and we still get all the great modes – including a stronger career mode and Ultimate Team – that gave FIFA 14 strength in depth. Most of all we get exceptional graphics and presentation, which make FIFA 15 look even more like the real deal on TV. There are wrinkles to be ironed out here, but this is a promising base on which a new generation of FIFA can build.

FIFA 15 is a well-formed successor, and excels in both gameplay and graphical departments, resulting in a well fabricated product that is both visually pleasing and fun to play. The game contains some glitches and issues as the franchise has always tended to do, but none of these issues take away from the great design and the major improvements that have been made. Much of the formula of FIFA 15 is the same, but pretty much all of it is better. FIFA 15 is a must have for FIFA fans and soccer enthusiasts alike.
