In addition to being a fun gameplay experience, it's also an example of how artistic vision and clever, light-hearted writing can enhance an experience, an example of what can be achieved when development studios devote themselves fully to delivering a high quality product.If you're an action platformer fan with quick thumbs, this is a must-buy.
This is a special game. It also puts me in a bit of a quandary. The original game came out last year, but should this version receive game-of-the-year consideration? I have five months to figure that out, because it's the best game I've played in 2014.
Rhythmic, colorful, funny, clever, the Latin Guacamelee! is so successful that it will make me lose my Latin. And like a plate of pollo nachos,it is to be shared. In this expanded version called Super Turbo Championship Edition, the Canadians of Drinkbox offer a little more to play and have mostly corrected the small flaws of their game already released on PS3, Vita, PC and Mac, and now available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and PS4... It would have been easy to "brutally" convert the already solid Guacamelee! to propose it even to those who had not played it on PlayStation Vita. And instead Drinkbox Studio decides to present itself with a very special re-edition. Although the changes to the combat system and the addition of some moves and the rabid Intense mode do not change the balance of the game, here there are new areas and an unprecedented boss fight, inspired and well built, which can almost be considered an "endgame" content by those who have already completed Juan's adventure.

In an era when re-releases are defined exclusively through a hurried assemblage of post-release content, it's nice to see a developer make a genuine effort to improve the whole game and not simply bolt parts on and call it a day. Guacamelee was already a great game, and while not all of the extras for Super Turbo Championship Edition are beneficial, it's tough to say the grand experience isn't better for their inclusion.
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is a great metroidvania, that takes tropes from the genre and turns them into a joke. Humor aside, this is a fun title with a colorful world and interesting combat.
Even if you've already played through Guacamelee! when it first made its rounds on the PS3 and Vita, the Super Turbo Championship Edition is packed with enough new content and tweaks, that it more than begs you to dive right back in and bust some skulls.

Guacamelee! it is always the usual fun to play, here seasoned by a 2D technical sector now close to perfection and by a few but targeted new content that improves its gameplay and increases its duration. G!STCE is an amazing achievement for an indie studio. The game is a perfect example of a Metroidvania style adventure and although it takes a lot of cues from its predecessors, it adds enough of its own originality to stand out from the crowd. I hope DrinkBox decide to bring back Juan and his world for a second outing in a sequel. For such a popular genre among gamers, it's surprising how few Metroidvanias actually make it out to mainstream consoles.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is beautiful 2D Metroidvania styled game for all ages.
The only shortcoming? You can wipe out the whole campaign in about five or so hours, and while there's plenty of extra content to take care of afterward (a "good" ending, for example, should you nail all the requirements), not much is there to revisit after game completion. But, while it's a short journey, it's one very worth playing. Oh, and did I mention the game is littered with pop culture (especially video game) references? I won't spoil them for you, but never thought I'd see a Super Mario RPG reference ever again.
Guacemelee is fun, hilarious and challenging... so why aren't you playing it?
A love letter to all things videogame, Guacamelee! is a fantastic blend of homage and originality, resulting in a wildly memorable, if a bit short, Metroidvania. From the title's tight platforming-heavy level design, to its skill based combat, there is never a dull moment in Juan's quest to save El Presidente's daughter. Although the script does rely on out of place humour perhaps too often, and the general difficulty does take a hit near the end, this makes for a fantastic experience from start to finish, with plenty to love and admire. Best of all, at no point in its quest to pay tribute to the legends that came before it does this title forget to craft an identity of its own, elevating the title to the same level as the ones that inspired it.
Guacamelee was great first time around and Drinkbox have taken something fantastic and improved on it even more this time with this release. In short, you wont regret buying this, even if you have before. I for one am looking forward to a sequel, but before that, maybe just one more go…
Were it a $60 boxed game, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The fact that it's available to you instantly and for less than half that, well, I don't need to finish that sentence, because you're not reading anymore.
