If you can avoid these performance issues, thankfully there’s a great deal of fun to be had with The Climb 2. While in many ways it does not feel like a massive leap in content from the first game and still somewhat feels a tad tech demo like for a game released in 2021, for fans of the thrill of free-soling and finding enjoyment in besting others in time records, it will be sure to please and keep you coming back for hours. Perhaps we will this gameplay engine implemented into a larger scope title down the line from Crytek.

The Climb on Oculus Quest brings over the full experience from the nearly 4 year old desktop version at the cost of some reduced graphical quality. The Climb does a good job of translating the rock climbing experience into a somewhat fun but challenging game that is also surprisingly rewarding and good looking. Although it's not perfect, and there are a few immersion breaking moments and confusing design choices; for fans of rock climbing or those looking for a slightly different VR experience or a good showpiece title, The Climb is worth a look.

I started this review talking about my fear of heights. I didn’t really mention it again. Somehow, that’s the amount of impact it had on my enjoyment of this game. Oh, and final word: Don’t play this game with low ceilings unless you like scraped knuckles.

The Climb is an excellent experience, one that works exceedingly well with the Oculus Touch controls. However, a lack of gameplay depth and overall number of environments could give some gamers pause when they try to decide if this is a journey worth undertaking.

The Climb is a cool and fun VR experience that takes an obvious VR concept and runs with it. The result is more positive than not and worth checking out if you have an interest in rock climbing.

The Climb has a really sturdy foundation built on entertaining mechanics, great feedback that keeps you moving, and deep hooks for multiplayer. At the same time, frustrations with the controls and a lack of an audience damages a lot of what Crytek has built.

With The Climb, Crytek has taken a throwaway traversal mechanic from games like Uncharted and masterfully turned that into its own compelling and complete experience.

Forget Crysis, The Climb is Crytek's best achievement in a long while. Is it worth $50? That depends entirely on how sold you are on VR.
