Yesterday Origins fails to escape many of the flaws of its genre, and doesn’t do enough with its story or characters to tolerate those issues.

A general point and click, with an interesting historical story, and great references to the occult. However, it lacks in sound design and graphics, plus some of the gameplay feels untidy.

All in all Yesterday Origins is a nice point and click title that seasoned gamers and new comers alike would be right at home with.

The puzzles are fiendishly tricky, the writing is witty, and once you get to grips with the not-particularly-slick controls, you may even love it. But we just keep coming back to that tragic voice acting. We can’t see past it. We can’t hear anything other than the stiff delivery. And it ruins the immersion of a game we desperately wanted to enjoy.

Yesterday Origins is certainly not going to win over new fans who aren't already dedicated to graphic adventures. There is very little on offer that hasn't been seen already in every other point and clicker that has come out over the last decade, and the inconsistent style and tone would likely put off many players as they try to persevere through. The premise and variety of locales however do make exploration interesting for those who can forgive its faults, and this is far from a bad game - just one that could have benefited from a more focused design approach.

Yesterday Origins is the reflection of the team behind it; a team with a deep passion for the genre that it has been serving for more than two decades, but also one that's not "there" yet. While generally a nice ancient mystery/crime thriller, and although the puzzle-solving is quite good, it certainly needs some fine tuning here and there, both when it comes to its characters, as well as its gameplay mechanics.

In the end, Yesterday Origins is part of a resurgence of the old point and click adventure game. It certainly offers a unique story in the realm of video games. Fans of the genre will certainly get a kick out of the game, others may just be intrigued enough by the story to try it out. But will it stand out as a classic in the genre when we're getting so many of them at the moment? Probably not.

Yesterday's Origins doesn't attempt to change the formula of the point and click adventure and that's okay. The story is delightfully bonkers and it looks pretty, but if you dig deep there's some repetition, some odd stylistic choices and you might not recall it in years to come, but it's nice to see such a game on Nintendo Switch.

Yesterday Origins is a classic adventure that tries to be modern - with detailed investigation system and consoles/tablets support, but gets stuck somewhere at the end of the last century with outdated game mechanics, ugly cutscenes and sometimes boring plot. And it's really sad.

Yesterday Origins has a strong cast of characters, an intriguing plot, and beautiful presentation. When you manage to work it all out, the game can be a real joy, but when things go wrong, it can be frustratingly slow and pedantic. Like its narrative, it jumps back in time to remind us of when games were far more frustrating and constrained. It brings back elements of gaming's past that we like, but it also brings back those that we don't. We've come a long way, but if all those troubles feel far away, well Yesterday Origins, to quote The Beetles, makes them look "as though they're here to stay".

Yesterday Origins is a game that brings a retro feel back to the Adventure genre. It's a game that places emphasis on a decent storyline, a great cast of characters, thorough exploration and puzzles that actually make you think. While these factors will make the game appeal to Adventure fans, newcomers to the genre will likely be put off by the unforgiving nature of some of the puzzles.

Pacing issues, unnecessary backtracking and some frustratingly complex puzzles mar a title that is well-written and holds a lot of charm. A competent game but one that isn't quite as good as its predecessor.

Yesterday Origins is a great graphic adventure with influences from the old ones and with a very interesting story. However, it has some plot holes and a few technical issues.

Yesterday Origins is a fairly successful return of immortal John Yesterday to our screens. The fans of hand-drawn adventure games and mystery themed stories should be not disappointed.

Yesterday Origins is a fantastic point-and-click adventure that features comic-styled panels to showcase the story of John trying to find a cure for his memory loss.

Yesterday Origins is straight up a point-and-click game as they come, bringing all the things from the old days of the genre and does nothing drastic to change from the norm.

The game's rather slow pace may not please everyone but this is a good proposal that has the merit of making a point and click game something enjoyable on a gaming console.

Repetitiveness, occasional frustrating puzzles and a couple of technical hitches may put you off Yesterday Origin, but if you persevere you will find an enjoyable, conspiracy thriller.

All round, it’s a solid point and click adventure game that combines that familiar old-school formula with a couple of clever quirks. It has a decent story to boot as well, though there are slight issues with pacing, both in terms of the how the narrative unspools combined with some of the more obtuse puzzles. Together, these create a barrier that will stump players while ultimately holding Yesterday Origins back from greatness.
