There are some elements of Prey which work fantastically well, making you feel like you’re playing one of the best games of the year so far. Without fail, however, you’re inevitably brought crashing back down to Earth by some of Prey’s dodgier, less well thought out elements...

The game is dour and oblivious that its destination is more interesting and vital than the journey.

At the opposite end of all the innovative ideas in Prey 2006, What hurts this game so deeply (besides combat of course!) is that it tries so hard to pack everything in one game: Bioshock's narrative and atmosphere, Dishonored's gameplay and mechanichs and a System Shock-esque setting. Prey is neither of those games; it can't even set its fundumental ideas correctly and the flaws in narrative (if there is any!) turn Prey into one of the thousands of mediocre games out there

Prey has all the atmosphere in the world but feels held down by its need to conform to what came before, its lack of enemy and weapon variety, and its refusal to let players choose their own path.

This psychological horror first-person shooter is set on the abandoned and desolate space station, Talos 1. Accompanied only by aggressive alien life, our protagonist Morgan (male/female depending on the player’s choice) is a marooned scientist suffering with complicated memory loss. Prey follows Morgan’s attempt to escape and prevent the alien Typhons from escaping with him.

You should not expect Prey to be much of a shooter. The gunplay is abysmal and resources quite limited. It rather focuses on many hours of exploration which give the game a slow pace. It has an interesting story with a lot of replay value but the outdated tech, bad graphics, absurd amount of loading screens, convoluted level designs and lack of waypoint markers are holding it back. If you liked the demo you will probably like the main game. If you didn’t, then it’s not for you.

I just got to a point where I didn’t want to invest any more time in this game and wanted to play something more exciting.

If you are truly desperate for a System Shock 2 successor then Prey might just scratch that itch. However, my mom always told me not to scratch an itch because it only makes things worse. She might have been right. (NOTE: Detailed analysis video available on the website)

Prey is a game that is a patchwork of other titles with no swatches of originality added to the mix.

Ultimately, I doubt I'll remember Prey much after I stop playing it. There's too much else going on in games in 2017, and Prey does not stand out amongst its peers. Its fiction is self-serious, despite being so derivative, and its systems are frustrating and constantly in conflict with each other. It feels like dozens of other games I've played already, but enjoyed more.

The people and aliens who fill its space—and the reasons Morgan has for spending so much time picking through its confines—are retreads of ideas and conventions visited many other times before. As much as its opening objective prompt promises, Prey doesn't represent change. It's just more of what what's been done before.

Despite its noticeable technical shortcomings, Prey still has some significant redeeming qualities. Its environment is one of the most enjoyable to explore and the way it weaves its overarching story into side quests only helps to accentuate the freedom you're given as a player.

Bethesda's reimagining of the popular shooting game combines the best of Bioshock, Dead Space and Dishonored but does little extra with them

A wasted opportunity to create a modern take on System Shock, with the dull storytelling and action overshadowing the otherwise effective puzzle elements.

Prey is aesthetically pleasing as its stylised art deco design, very much Bioshock in space, keeps the game running at a great pace while giving you just enough visual fidelity and variety to enjoy the architecture.

After playing Prey and experiencing its nonprogressive and unbalanced gameplay, all I can think of is if Prey was the exact reboot which Bethesda was looking for and whether such a mediocre game was worth the cancellation of Prey 2 or not.

Prey's sound design and soundtrack are some of the best to come from a game this year. Unfortunately, a lot of the aspects surrounding that hamper the potential set up from the game's impressive opening hour. The combat is a source of frustration, and the load times neuter exploration. But if you're able to look past that, Prey can provide some thrills.
