While its appearance is relatively humble the gameplay is surprisingly deep and surpassed my expectations. I’d approached it as if it would have simpler mobile-like mechanics and it does do a better job than that. About my only major complaint aside from the presentation would just be that there were sports where I’d set things in motion and then would have to wait to watch as everything got queued up. There is a fast forward button but even with that in effect there can be times when the game drags a bit. However, since even with the size of the Switch library this sort of game is an oddity it’ll likely be worth a look for people who enjoy their city building, just perhaps a little watered down overall, if nothing else by the lesser complexity of the time period.

Townsmen VR is a magical city-building VR simulation experience that has countless hours of gameplay fun. The game expands the goals slowly so you don't feel overwhelmed, but keeps you challenged with new things to build. Townsmen VR is a must-have for simulation fans to truly experience city-building game the way it was meant to be experienced.

Townsmen VR delivers an immersive experience on PSVR 2, with intuitive controls and engaging gameplay for VR newcomers and RTS beginners. Despite some control challenges and the absence of a fast-forward option, it remains a well-implemented and entertaining VR adaptation.

Veterans of city planning sims won't find anything revolutionary in the gameplay, but what they will find is a pleasant, engaging experience.

Over and over again some truly baffling decisions let it down, and while the scenarios justify the asking price in themselves, for any of us that prefer the sandbox mode of the simulations that we play, Townsmen is a complete misfire.

I think it’s fair to say that Townsmen isn’t going to be the deepest or most engaging game that you’ll play this year, but for me, it still manages to tick the two most important boxes that make me like it regardless.

Townsmen does nearly everything right. It is the definition of an indie underdog that has a real chance to become something special next time the developers go to town.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Townsmen. It is a fun game, a great time-waster, and it really made my brain work, which is always a plus. It looks and plays very well. I enjoyed getting my medieval game on and I am confident others will as well.  The complicated controls and learning curve may turn newer players off, but if you enjoy strategy games, you will have a good time building and maintaining your realm in Townsmen.

An endearing sim for PSVR 2 that amuses with its tactile nature. It's fairly basic once you wade past the initial deluge of tutorials, but it's still got plenty in it to keep you building a burgeoning community of your own.

Aligned with games like Animal Crossing, Townsmen VR aims to provide casual players with a relaxing and almost meditative experience. Its main value proposition is its immersive and exploratory nature, which can be a fun and satisfying adventure if you have the right expectations. The campaign story is simple but heartwarming, offering a comprehensive walkthrough of the game. If you're expecting a fast-paced, feature-rich RTS game, you'll be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a slow-paced but pleasant journey in a stunning, fully interactive, and immersive VR world, Townsmen VR should deliver a delightful and fun experience.

Townsmen is a good game that will keep strategy fans happy for a good while, but it's held back by some awkward controls and its basic aesthetic. Despite this, it gets a solid recommendation if you enjoy the genre and especially if you are itching for some town building on the train.
