Hive Jump is what XCOM would have become if developers abandoned turn-based combat and bet on action. Here we have a mix of turn-based tactical strategy on regional level and then we jump into the hive to slay aliens.

I think for those loving the retro-inspired genre Hive Jump is worth having. It’s not the type of title that will shatter expectations but it’s a solid release from Graphite Lab.

In the end, the overall difficulty of the game makes Hive Jump a hard game to recommend. Players looking for a one player run-and-gun game should look to other titles. If you like difficult multiplayer games, this might be the game you are looking for.

Despite the derivation, Hive Jump manages to become something unique. It’s not perfect. The old-school visuals and the occasionally frustrating controls will alienate some (no pun intended). But for those willing to accept the challenge, it’s a must have. Keep a spare controller and some Deep Heat spray ready though. You’ll thank me later.

Hive Jump is a fun, and challenging 2D procedurally generated action platformer on Nintendo Switch that might feel a bit repetitive for some of you, especially if you don't like roguelike experiences with randomly produced levels to play. The game has its flaws, but once you get into the groove, you can have fun on your own or with some fun co-op sessions.

The levels are too alike and the strategy elements between the stages aren't all that great. The extra modes can be decently fun, though they won't last for nearly as long. Overall, I really wanted to like Hive Jump a lot more, but as things progressed I became less of a fan.

Hive Jump is a decent roguelike with a great Arcade Mode, a good upgrade system, and enjoyable co-op, but with a very tough barrier of entry. While the other modes can be enjoyed once you get the hang of things in Arcade mode, this game is still one that requires a lot of grinding just to get the basic upgrades in order to survive.

I really appreciate the core bones of what Hive Jump offers, and for the first few hours while I was still getting into my groove it was quite a bit of fun. Familiarity, once it sets in, really wears on the experience though and while taking down the hive queen is a challenge there’s simply a lot of repetition to be had getting there which ends up feeling a bit pointless and for its own sake. With some support things get a bit chaotic and busy but the ability to have some more diverse builds that compliment each other does change things up a bit so that’s a plus. I’d love to see a more fleshed out sequel with more enemy variety and surprises, the core experience is there and it’s a good one, there’s just no missing the grind once it sets in.

Hive Jump is a fun single-player and multiplayer release that will keep you busy for a while thanks to its fast action, solid difficulty curve, and procedurally generated nature. The game is certainly not for everyone, but if you give it a chance, you will find an entertaining game to take on by your own or with friends by way of its local co-op.

Hive Jump blends together a mix of randomly generated levels, platforming, shooting, and even base defense to make for a fine action platformer.

The game is solid and invokes everything you loved about old school shooters. The co-op is great, the weapons are varied and the game is very challenging, even on the lowest difficulty. The unique death mechanic is a lot of fun and it really affects how you approach the game.

While I actually like Hive Jump and its ideas, as a beta tester of multiple different homebrew games this still has the feel of an incomplete beta.

In total, I spent about four hours playing Hive Jump, with most of that spent in Campaign. I also briefly tried out Arcade on easy, which seemed easier than Campaign at first but then the bosses utterly destroyed me. In fact, a boss I had no problems with in Campaign was suddenly a beast in Arcade. While the game is fun solo, I truly feel it was meant to be played with friends. It’s just too easy to get overwhelmed by the hordes of Ordovicians. So if you don’t have a bunch of friends who can crash and play on your couch, the game is much harder than it needs to be. And regarding the glitches, while not the worst thing, the Wii U version of Hive Jump can’t be its best while they persist. That said, for $14.99, Hive Jump is a fun, if flawed, experience. I’m glad I was finally able to play it on the console I backed it on, and I’m happy that Graphite Lab is making such a concerted effort to make the best game they can. I only hope the Wii U build gets patched soon, so Nintendo fans can enjoy it to the fullest.

Overall, Hive Jump is a disappointing game in light of the attention and buzz it once attracted. There are the bones of an interesting concept here, but it never seems to come together quite right once everything gets rolling. Repetitive gameplay, disappointing performance and ho-hum presentation make this a game that's 'ok' at best. We'd recommend this one only to players who are eager for a co-op action shooter for their Wii U. It does what it says on the tin, just don't expect to come away from this one wowed by the experience.

Hive Jump is a solid game and is very enjoyable even after multiple hours of playing through it. Most people will skip over this game and will miss out; if you love space games and especially run-and-gun games, then we highly suggest you buy this game on Steam. It is well worth your $20!

Hive Jump's gameplay if fun at first, but it's get repetitive very soon. Still, a great cooperative multiplayer saves the day and makes Hive Jump worth trying out.

Hive Jump is a fun and exciting retro shooter romp, with plenty of variety and a great co-op multiplayer experience marred by a lonely single player mode.

Hive Jump combines many sub-genres of action-platformers into one game, and does them all fairly well.
