If it weren't plagued with issues, Super Bomberman R would be a fine return to the PC for the series. Both the campaign and the multiplayer lack the flourishes that make some of the older entries memorable, but the core gameplay still holds up enough to remain enjoyable for newcomers and more casual players of the series. You have to treat the game as a local multiplayer title instead of an online one and hope you don't get hit with controller issues. Considering both the price point and the fact that other indie titles have already run with this concept to a much better execution, however, your best bet is to check out the game once it goes on sale or has a good price drop.

Super Bomberman R is a revival of a great old character and it's a silver lining for Konami fans to hope this company might save its other franchises in near future.

Super Bomberman R is a good game. It’s not that great, but it’s good enough to let me play through all the levels in story mode and a couple of matches with people I know. What’s really great is how many new characters are being added to the playable roster after all these months, with the latest being Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series. Playstation even gets an additional Ratchet and his trusty robot sidekick Clank.

Overall Super Bomberman R is a great take on the classic formula. I enjoyed what it delivered and the extra characters add that nostalgia meter rise for me. I just wish Konami was bringing them to more franchises outside of this one. Still, this game serves its purpose and it is nice to finally see it on other consoles outside of the Switch. [OpenCritic note: Ken McKown separately reviewed the Switch (6) and Xbox One (7) versions. The scores have been averaged.]

If you are a fan of the Bomberman franchise, Super Bomberman R will probably satisfy you, but it's clearly focused on the multiplayer mode.

Super Bomberman R is living among a wave of re-imagines of classic titles and often feels too traditional for its own good. Despite terrific post-launch support from Konami and a creative level design, the thoughtful online modes and customization are hindered by terrible infrastructure that drags down the experience.

Super Bomberman R goes big on multiplayer and brings the fun. The campaign however does not due to a weird balancing act. Thanks to fast gameplay and many characters there is plenty to do even though the in-game currency is way off.

It may not be a perfect game, but it’s still great for local multiplayer fun. If the online was more active, it would be a much better experience.

Family? Friends? What are those? Super Bomberman R brings the fun and cutthroat rendition of the classic Bomberman formula, not just on the Switch but other consoles a year later. Positives include a story mode with crazy boss fights plus hectic online and local multiplayer with up to eight players. However, input lag and latency, which was an issue on the Switch release, continues to negatively impact the experience on PS4, particularly when playing online. Despite that, the game is still a blast, especially when you get four people together in your living room or with mics online.

Super Bomberman R is a fun multiplayer game that offers a traditional story mode that is incredibly short in length. As a result, it is hard to recommend it for a purely single-player experience. Despite offering online multiplayer, it is still a wonky implementation which makes it best suited for local multiplayer.

Visually it has charm, and its soundtrack teeters on the line between repetitive and infectiously catchy. It's the gameplay that's the real hook though, and there's plenty of it as long as you have friends to play with. If you don't, well, you'll find Super Bomberman R rather limited.

Despite a couple of flaws, Super Bomberman R is a strong entry into a long-running franchise. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but offers enough variation to the gameplay to keep veterans of the series on their toes, while also helping newcomers ease into the format. It's a shame that online battles seem to be such a mess at the moment, because with that up and running to its full potential this would easily be the definitive Bomberman game.

Super Bomberman R has already launched for the new systems and you have the ability to snag it now for the price of 39.99 USD for all platforms except Nintendo Switch, where it is still 49.99. You will have hours of fun with friends or family, even by yourself. Recommended!

While future Bomberman games have the potential to assert themselves as more lengthy and strategy-demanding titles deserving of a mind-blowing rating, the current release really is just lighthearted and fun … and that's just fine.

Super Bomberman R makes its grand debut on PlayStation 4 without any significal changes. The fun part of the game stays with its story mode as well as the local multiplayer, due to the fact that there are barely any active online sessions. The gameplay, albeit simple and effective, feels old-fashioned and it becomes repetitive after some time.

Super Bomberman R gives the player many hours of fun... in the multiplayer. The story mode is fun and the controls are simple and easy to learn and dominate, which only adds to its success as a local multiplayer game, even if it doesn't do much more than that.

Bomberman has always been a series that I’ve held close to my heart, and whilst it might have got off to a rocky start on the Nintendo Switch, the commitment Konami has shown in releasing free updates has been commendable. Everything has been packaged together nicely in Super Bomberman R: Shiny Edition, and it’s helped make it a genuinely worthwhile title in the series that’s an absolute blast to play (both figuratively and literally). Whilst Super Bomberman R’s original release on the Nintendo Switch might have left gamers feeling a bit short-changed, the new ‘shiny’ edition is simply jam-packed with enough content to keep you bombing your friends and online foes for a long time.

Bigger multiplayer games may be on the way, but Super Bomberman R will still give you plenty of reasons to gather around the TV – or perhaps even just the Switch itself – for a long time to come.
