Super Bomberman R could have been the return to glory of a franchise that has been missing for quite some time, especially over here in North America. Not counting small releases that hit platforms such as Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3, and the eShop on the Nintendo Wii, we haven’t seen an actual Bomberman game since Bomberman Land on the Wii back in 2008. That’s a fairly long time to go without any new releases on a franchise as popular as Bomberman once was. It’s sad to say, but Super Bomberman R is not going to rekindle the love for the series that fans were hoping for. Maybe one day we’ll get lucky, but that day is certainly not today.

Fun, but far from an explosive reinvention.

Super Bomberman R is an absolute blast and the perfect party game, but even in the explosive mayhem, it struggles to justify the price tag it has been slapped with.

As a series, Bomberman has its bad entries but is otherwise considered to be among the ranks of gaming classics. Super Bomberman R spits on that as one of the undeniably worst entries in the series, taking into account the time at which it was released and what came before it. As a “celebration” of 33 years of the franchise, it does sweet bugger all to actually encapsulate what has made the series good. Whether it be uninspired design, the most standard mechanics of the series with no innovation, and a lame attempt at including a story, Bomberman R is not short in ways to disappoint long-time fans. I find it incredibly difficult to believe that anything remotely resembling pride was involved in its development. If this has been a budget, eShop title on release then it might have been forgiveable. However, this was released as a full priced launch title for the Nintendo Switch, and for that I would expect much better than this.

While the game is charming and great for multi-player, the lack of content outside of the multiplayer makes it hard to justify Bomberman R, especially at a full retail price.

Super Bomberman R is easily one of the most addicting games on the Nintendo Switch, especially considering its versatility, but it’s hard to justify its price.

Super Bomberman R for Nintendo Switch feels incredibly overpriced and I’d have a hard time recommending the game over many of the other Switch launch games. You’re better off to wait and find one these in the bargain bin this upcoming holiday.

Super Bomberman R doesn’t do anything incredibly unique as far as the series is concerned. Fans of Bomberman will want to pick it up though, since its still a rip-roaring good time with friends.

As much fun as I had with Super Bomberman R, I can't ignore the flaws. Online battles don't even work, and the story mode has tons of flaws.

There are better, cheaper, and less broken versions of Bomberman out there.

Super Bomberman R marks the return of the Bomberman series after a long absence and the result is a mixed bag. While the local multiplayer works as expected from a Bomberman game (the Joycon controls do everything right) and is by far the most fun component of Super Bomberman R, its story mode fails to stand out and several technical flaws prevent it from reaching a higher quality threshold. The game also seems unambitious, with very few innovations compared to what was already seen in the series.

After seven years of nothingness for the White Bomber, it's a serviceable but unadventurous return to form.

There’s no major evolution here and there doesn’t need to be, but this game is erratically broken and in desperate need of repair. Still, that vintage Bomberman charm is ever intact and able to seep through, even in the game’s most frustrating moments.

For a 50 Dollar game, Super Bomberman R does not justify its value for money in the small content it has. Even with a pretty fun multi-player modes, it still has an expensive price point for a game in this age.

As nice as it is to see a long-dormant retro series return, Super Bomberman R's lack of creativity and unbalance issues result in it not feeling like the proper comeback it could have been.

Super Bomberman R is the game that Switch needed at its begining. Quick plays and lots of action with your friends in a very entertaining game that brings back the nostalgia.

An enjoyable game both cooperatively and competitively, with a cheerful 90's style look and feel and a decent enough amount of content. The simplicity and slight repetitiveness of the campaign, and the competitive mode not shaking up the formula makes it a game aimed more at series veterans than newcomers.

Super Bomberman R doesn't reinvent the wheel and might be hard to recommend to most players due to a lack of value. Its greatest strength is in its local multiplayer capabilities, but a combination of finicky controls, a high price tag for the amount of content the game packs, and a mediocre online experience holds back an otherwise fun game.

There's not really very much to say about Super Bomberman R. It's the Bomberman you've come to know and love, which counts very much against its favour once you factor in its cost. It's no doubt fun, especially in multiplayer, but that fleeting fun is expensive.

Bomberman succeeds perfectly at establishig itself as a good party game on Switch. It manages to keep its fun spirit, mad and colorful that made its past glory. We can only regret that Konami doesn't take any risk and does not try to implement new items, and the precision gets sometimes ruined by the Joy-Con stick. If you're a fan of the ip or the stories lived by your elders got your attention, Super Bomberman R must appear in your Nintendo Switch library.
