The utterly bizarre nature of Danganronpa is what made me want to play them, and, after a certain point, grim determination is all that kept me going. At their core, there’s a lot of really cool concepts in these games that make for an excellent story overall. To get to those, however, means trudging through some uninspired writing, misguided attempts at genre blending, and just some of the worst anime tropes one could include in their narrative. This all improves for Danganronpa 2, which is a much stronger title than the first, but these problems are still present in some form. This might just be me, however; if visual novels are your thing, I’m sure there’s a lot to love about the games, and there’s no denying the series’ cult following. Danganronpa 1.2 Reload is still a good collection and does an excellent job of presenting both games and their extra content. If you’re interested in seeing them for yourself, or you want to get all nostalgic over the series, it’s a collection worth picking up.

Danganronpa is like a mashup of Persona’s social interactions with Ace Attorney’s trial gameplay. What you get is a satisfying blend of story, characters and gameplay that doesn’t get stale.

If you are looking for a game with a great story, art, characters, and makes you feel like a detective, this is the best game out there for that. I’ve played these games to completion twice now, and I would gladly do it all over again. Now we enter the final six month stretch until Killing Harmony! At least we have Ultra Despair Girls to look forward to on the PlayStation 4 in June until then.

One of the best visual novels series out there. A gameplay similar to the Ace Attorney games that achieves it’s own identity. A great storyline filled with violence, intrigue and amazing plot twist.

Danganronpa 1•2 Reload offers something entirely unique for Playstation 4 gamers, with an experience that mixes up a gripping visual novel narrative with a series of deadly murder investigations. The fact that it’s incredibly well written, features some fantastic artwork, and has a great cast of colourful characters only strengthens its appeal, ensuring that you’ll be entertained throughout all of the forty plus hours the package offers. There’s no doubting that it won’t be for everyone – I’m sure some gamers won’t enjoy all of the reading involved with a visual novel – but those who give it a chance will fall in love with the nefarious escapades of Monokuma and his poor students.

Asides from confusion, one thing that Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is good at is providing interesting, well written character dialogues and interactions between it’s varied and colourful cast of 16 school students – From Akane, the Gymnast with the heart of a tiger, to the eccentric and folklore-spewing Ghundam, to the calm, quiet and reference-spewing Chiaki, each character has their own unique charm, quirk, and memorable piece of backstory that’ll stick with you throughout even the final moments of the game.

We already know both titles are good games for anyone interested in murder mysteries or dark, tense videogames. They've been around for half a decade now, and there's still more in the franchise on the way.

The Danganronpa games are wonderful visual novels with excellent casts of characters, so I highly recommend that you give Danganronpa 1-2 Reload a go on PS4. This is especially important since that way you can prepare for the release of Danganronpa 3 later in the year!

What is important to any great visual novel is that it has great writing, and the Danganronpa games are by turns hilarious, reflective, intense and jovial, the characters are all unique and interesting, and the twists and turns are often startling. Visual novels just don't get better than these.

Replaying these games once again really hammers home just how great they are. Even with knowing every chapter, every death, every culprit, and every twist, there is still just so much to enjoy here. So many funny moments, great characters, fantastically surreal situations, a superb soundtrack - it's just all so good. So good, in fact, that the lack of any new content can even be overlooked. It's even better for those new to the franchise that can experience all the twists and surprises that are there in abundance. This is a release that even the home audience of Japan hasn't got yet (nor has it even been announced!), and one that Western fans should snatch up.

I really loved my time with both Danganronpa games. It's a special series that does a great job at presenting very interesting tales. I'm glad the games got ported to the PS4, especially before the upcoming release of the third title in the franchise! It's a great way for people to catch up on the series, particularly if you don't own a Vita. There's a huge amount of content to enjoy in this collection, and I hope you get a chance to play it soon!
