Mario is back for some more sporting fun and if you can find him some pals the potential value and fun are endless. If not? Your mileage will be limited.
In short, Superstars is a solid game that perhaps bit off more than it could chew, and is tethered to a limiting Amiibo card system that holds players back needlessly. I do hope that Nintendo comes back to Superstars in some form on Switch, but for now this is a decent option for sports fans on the go.
Mario Sports Superstars is feature rich and fun, but much better with friends
Unfortunately, with no download play option, you’ll only be able to play locally with friends who also own the game.
Mario Sports Superstars is like a coworker everybody hates because they do just enough work to not get fired. It’s not a good game, not by a long shot, but it does just enough right that I can’t in good conscience call it outright bad. What I can call it is a lazy experience, one developed solely for the purpose of selling what are basically Mario-branded Topps cards. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to pour myself another drink.
Mario Sports Superstars it's a mediocre game by itself and even more in Nintendo's standard. The real problem is not that the developers sacrificed depth in favor of greater variety, but that the execution lacked charisma in each and every sport. There's no emotion nor intensity, only a very generic and technical experience. If Camelot and Nintendo would have chosen to leave behind the seriousness, to embrace the chaos and spontaneity that worked so well in the past, maybe then Mario Sports Superstars could had become a great sports game.

Despite the package including five sports, their shallow nature means the novelty wears off fast

Mario Sports Superstars takes the mechanics from some of Nintendo's popular sports series and puts them in one package. While games like tennis and golf do a good job in emulating the gameplay of Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, the bare bones features make the total experience feel stripped down — essentially turning it into a jack of all trades and master of none. If you like simple minigame collections, however, this is one of the better ones out there.
Mario Sports Superstars provides players with five different sports to play through, offering consumers great value, but ultimately this jack of many trades is a master of none.
Mario Sports Superstars ist für mich in allen Belangen eine runde Sache. Kurz gesagt bietet es mir genau das, was ich suche. Obwohl keine der fünf Disziplinen das Potential dazu hat, mich für eine wirklich lange Sitzung an den 3DS zu binden, spielt die Sammlung in puncto "Kurzzeitmotivation" oder als "Spiel für zwischendurch" seine Trümpfe voll aus. Die Steuerung ist eingängig und der Comic-Look schön anzusehen. Und trotz der süßen Verpackung schlummert unter der Oberfläche hier und da durchaus eine anspruchsvolle Sportsimulation. Ich kann zwar beim Tennis nach Lust und Laune die Bälle über das Netz dreschen, ohne mich auch nur einen Deut um Realismus zu scheren - andererseits gibt mir der Golf-Kurs aber auch die Möglichkeit, einen filigranen Schlag auf das Grün zu platzieren. Wer auch nur irgendetwas für die Art von Sport übrig hat, wie sie Nintendo nun schon seit Jahren zelebriert, und seinen 3DS noch nicht einmotten will, kann hier in jedem Fall zugreifen.

For some reason Nintendo insists that Mario Sports games should be vapid experiences that insult the intelligence of the very young children that they seem to be pitched at.
Mario Sports Superstars could appeal to multiple demographics, but might not hold the attention for any of them. Each sport is fun, but the lack of variety in games and their respective courses wears thin.
Mario Sports Superstars means well but ultimately fails in delivering a title that is on par with previous sports games of the Mario universe. While the rich visual environment will keep the eyes fairly satisfied, most of the sports included feel empty and fall behind the threshold of fun, thus not justifying a long term investment in the overall game.

Mario Sports Superstars has some interesting games and works well when you play with friends or compete online, but unfortunately none of the five sports are enough deep to consider them as the best Mario sports games.

It’s another Mario Sports game and just as satisfyingly predictable or unsatisfyingly unambitious as you imagine.
"Mario Sports Superstars" is a very competent sports collection for the Nintendo 3DS. It is great for quick pick-up-and-play; whether in single player or multiplayer, each of the five games are run in their own right. The only issue I can truly find with this game is that each of the games could have been fleshed out more, or offered better rewards for grinding through the single player content. Nevertheless, I can recommend this game for anyone looking for a good sports collection to play on the 3DS. But, if you are only a fan of one of these sports, your best bet is to just find the Mario game that is dedicated to them.
If you're looking for a fun little gift for younger players or if you are hankering for some casual Mario sports action you don't have to look further than this game.
Mario and friends have tried out a number of different sports over the years and the latest struggles to live up to that long legacy. The core gameplay of each of the sports is solid, but it feels like the most basic form of each was plucked from a superior title.
