Overall, Touhou Genso Wanderer is a fun roguelike dungeon crawler with plenty of content to enjoy and a considerable challenge. One false move could be the end of your journey, but you will always learn from the experience and get ready to try it all over again. You'll spend dozens of hours trying to see everything the game has to offer as you journey towards that shiny Platinum trophy at the end of the road.

Touhou is a game that thrives on difficult but fun gameplay, but may be to much for those not interested in the series.

A proper roguelike in Touhou Project universe. Made for fans, but solid gameplay should appeal also to the others.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is a rogue-like spin-off of the Touhou series. With fancy opening cinematics, tsukkomi humour, and enough characters to populate a small village, Genso Wanderer definitely paints a colorful world for the female dominant cast. Genso Wanderer has you guide the a lazy shrine maiden, Reimu, through a mysterious(ish) tower that has appeared because a local shop owner, Rinnoske, discovered an evil artifact that possessed him. Now it is up to Reimu to solve the incident, which is apparently in her job description.

Touhou Genso Wanderer can feel like a lot to take on at times. As beginners to the series, a lot of time was spent feeling as if we were on the back foot and had missed chunks of tutorial content. The game's fun enough to begin with but becomes frustrating very quickly, and ultimately doesn't offer enough excitement to sustain any interest that it may have piqued early on.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is a charming and challenging take on the classic Mystery Dungeon formula with lovably wacky Touhou characters. Presentation is great for this type of roguelike game and it also features lots of Japanese voice acting. Like many games in the genre, it can feel grindy and repetitive at times, and its difficulty also might scare newcomers away. If you like games like Shiren or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, however, this is one title you'll want to wander into.

A roguelike like many other out there, imbued with cuteness but boring and frustrating in most of its moments.

The fans of the Touhou series will probably appreciate another adventure, and that's probably the same for the roguelike genre's ones too. However, there doesn't seem to be much to look forward to for all the other gamers

Interesting but simply. Fun but ugly. Addictive but not for very long... A nice game that makes a well a lot of things, but also fails on others.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is fairly accessible to newcomers. And, while the game falls among the shorter in the genre, the added bonus content after you beat the game for the first time is a nice addition. Touhou and dungeon crawler fans alike would enjoy this title, but at full price it might not be for everyone.

The strange structure and difficulty curve means that newcomers to this style of RPG might not make it much further than the tutorials. While there’s some fun Touhou flavour for the items and gear (I was pleasantly surprised when a status effect temporarily turned everything into creepy “yukkuri” heads), it never really elevates the game from being more than another Mystery Dungeon clone.

The two genres that Touhou Genso Wanderer is tackling have seen a bit of a resurgence in recents months and years. This is an enjoyable entry into either one, and while it is far from perfect and has quite a few flaws, there still is enough to find exciting about it and to wonder what will be next in the Touhou project. Unfortunately though, there’s just a bit more negative aspects that really hindered our experience from the positive aspects.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is still easily the best ‘Mystery Dungeon’ style game you can buy in English right now with a far better combat system and a great sense of humour. It is just sad that the game seems to take every opportunity to stop you from getting to that fun, by either making movement far more complicated than it needs to be to unusual localisation decisions. These are things that just get in the way of a game that has been released at an incredibly competitive time of the year. With loads of other games also coming out that will be demanding attention, Touhou Genso Wanderer needed a bit more polish than it got to stand out.

Ultimately, Genso Wanderer is a unique and intimidating game… It may lack Touhou’s epic music or its frantic bullet-hell difficulty, but it brings out what’s always been enticing about these games and, more specifically, its community’s ability to create.

Despite some imperfections, Touhou Genso Wanderer is a good rouguelike JRPG, with a funny gameplay and a high level of difficulty

I suspect I will always have time for a good, classical roguelike. They're becoming less frequent, and therefore I think we need stuff like Genso Wanderer to keep the tradition alive. It's not perfect, and it will frustrate many, but it's a quality, solid effort nonetheless.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is a very fun and challenging game on PS4. Due to its roguelike nature, there's certainly some trial and error in the mix while you learn the basics and what enemies can do in battle. With some careful planning and by using your items wisely you'll be able to make good progress in the game before facing your end. If you're a fan of the genre then be sure to give this one a go!

I’m sad to say that I can’t in good conscience recommend Touhou Genso Wanderer for anyone outside of the anime fandom, unless if they’re a genuine Touhou fan.
