Suffice it to say, Herald's narrative focus and somewhat dark themes may not be everyone's cup of tea. Having said that, I really can't stress enough how well-done the game is within this scope.

Sure, it can be a fairly short experience, but providing you engage with it in the way the game intends you to, Herald is a fantastic experience.

Despite a few quirky animations, Herald provides an excellent story supplemented by a beautiful art style. This is a small scale point-and-click affair; if you're looking for a bite-sized drama, you've found your game.

While Herald: An Interactive Period Drama has some incredibly annoying issues, it's still shaping up to be an interesting experience overall. With some of these rough edges filed down, this could be one of the most compelling visual novels around. Hopefully, the next two books take what this game excels at and makes them even better, with feedback from gamers taken on-board.

Herald is an engrossing nautical tale about colonialism that heavily touches upon race and class, but brings with it a nuance and subtlety uncommon in video games. Developer Wispfire has made a powerful debut, leaving no rough edges or longueurs to sully a high-quality narrative experience. It left me simultaneously satisfied and wanting more—more than just the two planned books that will complete the game.
