Its opening few hours proved mildly amusing, if a bit underwhelming given my high expectations, but the game soon after won me over in a big way to the point where countless softlocks, bugs, and typos couldn’t stop me from playing. While the way you get into combat is reminiscent of the encounters in Chrono Trigger, its biggest takeaway from that game is instead rock-solid pacing that avoids wasting your time with nonsense padding, and there are a handful of features taken from other games that are equally welcome. All of this coalesces into something that’s simultaneously a brilliant homage to classic jRPGs and strong entry in the genre in its own right.

Cosmic Star Heroine does for the 16-bit JRPG what Shovel Knight did for 8-bit platformers. It takes everything that worked about them to remind you of why those games are classics, but builds upon that foundation with a modern-day sensibility by eliminating filler.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a love letter to some of the RPG greats from ages past, wearing its inspirations on its sleeve while making an impact very much its own. Brilliant, tactile combat and a lovely presentation bring out all the nostalgic feels.

With more work on the story and writing, Cosmic Star Heroine could have been an incredible game. At the very least, it contributes a fantastic new battle system to the world of old-school RPGs.

Playing through took me about 12 hours, though it might take more or less time if you bump up the difficulty or stick to the critical path. None of the problems I had with this game are insurmountable, and I'm hoping that Zeboyd will be able to fix them with an update. In spite of the bugs, I enjoyed exploring the galaxy with Alyssa and her crew, but you may want to wait for a patch or two before mainlining this Heroine.

This take on classic turn-based RPGs struggles to give its fresh ideas room to breathe.

My take away from the entire experience is that this is one game every RPG player needs to check out. Regardless if they never had a chance to play older RPGS or not, there is a fun combat system here with great locations, soundtrack, and characters. It’s as if Zeboyd games reached into a closet, pulled out some magical missing SNES cartridge no one ever discovered, and said “Boy, do I have a RPG you need to play”

Cosmic Star Heroine is an awesome title. It's story is well paced, the environments are gorgeous in that retro style that they use and the combat is simply fun with the variety of characters that themselves are great with their personalities. All of this is made even better with the various nods both big and small to other series such as Chrono Trigger, Pacific Rim, I believe I saw something for Xenogears and the obvious tribute to Cthulhu.

Cosmic Star Heroine is the perfect example of a crowdfunded indie game that might have been held back by budget and time. I enjoyed everything the game had to offer, but I was was left wanting more than a short RPG experience with an overused premise. If you're looking for a gorgeous 16-bit RPG with a unique battle system and a short campaign than Cosmic Star Heroine is going to resonate with you perfectly, but if you're looking for a story that will stick with you over the years than you probably should look elsewhere.

Glitches aside, Cosmic Star Heroine is one of those pleasant experiences made by a talented smaller studio that revels in gaming's roots. All at once a homage and a refinement of classic RPGs with just enough heart and imagination to rope in players of any age or skill.

The robust world and intricate combat system are Cosmic Star Heroine's shining stars but neither aspect is without flaws.

Cosmic Star Heroine overpromised, underdelivered, and yet it still managed to be an interesting game with an unique humor for fans of the genre attracted to the aesthetics of older generations.

Cosmic Star Heroine pays homage to legendary 16-bit jRPGs. It's exceptionally funny, engaging and endearing game, but Alyssa L'Salle's adventure ends too fast and leave the player wanting a lot more.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a fine RPG. What could have been a nostalgic throwback to the golden age of RPG’s is instead a thoughtful and well designed modern take on classic titles.

It's a solid homage to beloved 16-bit RPGs of yore, but it lacks the magic and depth that made them unmissable classics.
