This take on classic turn-based RPGs struggles to give its fresh ideas room to breathe.

With more work on the story and writing, Cosmic Star Heroine could have been an incredible game. At the very least, it contributes a fantastic new battle system to the world of old-school RPGs.

Cosmic Star Heroine is far more than a simple send-up of some of the genre’s most beloved classics.

Cosmic Star Heroine achieved what it set out to do: a great RPG gameplay experience. the game design is smart and modern despite the game being 16 bit-like, and the battles are based on strategy and customization. the weak point is the storytelling which simplified everything the characters had to face and kept moving very fast.

Cosmic Star Heroine overpromised, underdelivered, and yet it still managed to be an interesting game with an unique humor for fans of the genre attracted to the aesthetics of older generations.

Cosmic Star Heroine feels like a short, classic JRPG that has been ported from an ancient system, warts and all. Some of the glitches and usability issues are criminal, and should never be acceptable.

This is a homage to the classic sci-fi RPGs of the '90s that successfully takes out many of the annoying bits but boasts a fair amount of the depth and consistency. Cosmic Star Heroine is a JRPG for those who long ago grew bored of JRPGs, but committed fans might find it just a little too slight an offering.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a winner, even if you're too young to have experienced the games it references. Check it out.

The robust world and intricate combat system are Cosmic Star Heroine's shining stars but neither aspect is without flaws.

Not every game needs to be 100 hours long and cost $60. Cosmic Star Heroine hits the sweet spot of delivering fun gameplay mechanics with an upbeat and crazy story filled with charming characters and funny writing.

Cosmic Star Heroine pays homage to legendary 16-bit jRPGs. It's exceptionally funny, engaging and endearing game, but Alyssa L'Salle's adventure ends too fast and leave the player wanting a lot more.

Cosmic Star Heroine is the perfect example of a crowdfunded indie game that might have been held back by budget and time. I enjoyed everything the game had to offer, but I was was left wanting more than a short RPG experience with an overused premise. If you're looking for a gorgeous 16-bit RPG with a unique battle system and a short campaign than Cosmic Star Heroine is going to resonate with you perfectly, but if you're looking for a story that will stick with you over the years than you probably should look elsewhere.

Cosmic Star Heroine is an accessible RPG that fits very well with the Switch's lineup. While some issues like bugs and an underwhelming story hold it back from being an RPG classic, the experience is propelled by its innovative and creative combat system and eclectic cast of characters.

Playing through took me about 12 hours, though it might take more or less time if you bump up the difficulty or stick to the critical path. None of the problems I had with this game are insurmountable, and I'm hoping that Zeboyd will be able to fix them with an update. In spite of the bugs, I enjoyed exploring the galaxy with Alyssa and her crew, but you may want to wait for a patch or two before mainlining this Heroine.

If you are a fan of retro-styled JRPG titles, Cosmic Star Heroine provides a nice dose of nostalgic science fiction to enjoy. The visuals are better than the sound, but the overall presentation is comfortable and enjoyable, ably assisted by a deeper-than-expected combat system. There is not a ton of content here nor replay value in the roughly dozen hours it takes to see Alyssa's adventure through to the end, but it is definitely a worthwhile adventure while it lasts.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a fine RPG. What could have been a nostalgic throwback to the golden age of RPG’s is instead a thoughtful and well designed modern take on classic titles.

Although the story never amounts to much more than listing off sci-fi tropes, it keeps the adventure moving between fun setpieces. Where Cosmic Star Heroine really surprised me was by having one of my favourite turn-based battle systems that gives players a lot of options without ever overwhelming them. What could've been a lazy throwback to better 16-bit RPGs in less capable hands turned into one of the best indie RPGs in recent memory.

My take away from the entire experience is that this is one game every RPG player needs to check out. Regardless if they never had a chance to play older RPGS or not, there is a fun combat system here with great locations, soundtrack, and characters. It’s as if Zeboyd games reached into a closet, pulled out some magical missing SNES cartridge no one ever discovered, and said “Boy, do I have a RPG you need to play”

Cosmic Star Heroine is a nostalgic experience that is worth playing if you are a fan of the 16-bit JRPG era. The cast is full of wonderful characters, the plot interesting and the battle system engaging. The whole game is wrapped up in a ten-twelve hour experience which was the perfect length to see the story out.
