Instead of giving players an interesting original story, it's just yet another by-the-numbers LEGO title that will leave players occasionally laughing between bouts of frustration between its dull combat and often counterintuitive puzzles. Ultimately, this is one brick that doesn't have to be collected.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 has a faded and boring story, a huge amount of unnecessary and uninteresting characters, a lot of monotonous levels, bad camera, stupid companions and a broken cooperative mode. At the moment, this is the worst game in the superhero universe. And you just better skip it to avoid negative emotions.

Playing LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 is a constant battle between being pulled in by TT Games' charm and being pushed away by the repetitive gameplay. For every excellent moment there are seemingly multiple forgettable ones, but if you can stomach the lows of the story, then there are some fun times to be had. Still, this middling effort shows that the LEGO series is in need of some revitalising changes.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 will entertain the younger players, but its messy combat and dull open world make it one of the weaker entries in the LEGO pantheon.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 combines two exciting properties into an uninspired package.

LEGO Superheroes 2 adds more characters, references, and story to the previous entry while remaining to stand still is most other regards. Plenty of fun with friends or hunting down that last objective, but when left to your own devices, you might find yourself deviating.

It is known how much I adore LEGO games, but these last two have been glitch-filled messes. I can't recommend this one at all, even to those who loved the first one, until TT Games puts out a hefty patch to resolve these glitches. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 isn't unplayable by any stretch, but it's a downright frustrating adventure with these game-breaking issues. Ye have been warned.

That is also my only criticism: it is time for a really big change in the LEGO games because no matter how good they are, they will never continue to work out the same style. For anyone who has played a game of LEGO before, I would be able to review this game in one sentence: The same sheet and suit, but bigger and better than ever.

Apart from a small UI overhaul, a fragmented hub, and a batch of new and redesigned characters, this is more Lego, more Marvel, and more collecting. For better or worse.

Perhaps that's the issue. Deep within all of this stuff, under layers and layers of outdated game design carried by the Lego brand, is a promising game. The writing and character direction is, by and large, excellent. At its best, the game is a celebration of Marvel, putting together characters from lore deep-dives with big-screen names like Captain America and Star-Lord. At its worst, it is a vague, opaque slog through hundreds of identical enemies and bad level design. Sadly, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is more “stepping on lego bricks” than “excelsior.”

A case of diminishing returns, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is certainly ambitious in terms of scale and playable character numbers, while the story is entertaining. Yet it fails to deliver anything really new or interesting, making this a case of been there, done that. The first LEGO Marvel game is better.

The good news is that Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a faithful rendition of the classic Lego game formula. The bad news is that Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a faithful rendition of the classic Lego game formula. Personally, I'm feeling a bit tapped out after playing more than a decade's worth of Lego games without much change to the base formula. If you love Lego games or want to try them out for the first time, however, then Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is one block party you might want to get into.

Overall, LMSH2 is a Marvel fan’s dream. With a huge amount of characters and content from the majority of Marvel’s past and present catalogue there is heaps of fan service in store. Whilst the omission of certain characters and the lacklustre combat disappoints, the puzzling and sheer quantity of quality content makes up for these hiccups.

It's all become a bit "paint by numbers" with LEGO styled games, but what's on offer in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is enjoyable. There's plenty of content and Marvel fans young and old will no doubt enjoy it.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 successfully builds on the Lego franchise in new and interesting ways while telling a pretty decent story, but awkward character exclusions, wonky voice acting, and bugginess keep it from being as super as it could be.

A very fun game with lots and lots of things to do, sadly let down by some bugs and poor audio quality. 70s songs and a 90s story don't quite save this.
