Matterfall tried to combine classic 2D shooting games with platform jumping games and provided a good playing style, but despite the powerful abilities and weapons Avalon uses, you will often feel weak and nervous at times because of the difficulty of the game. I would've been pleased if they were added a cooperative mode to increase the fun, but instead the studio has made it possible to compare your scores with your friends and everyone who plays the game around the world to know your world ranking, making you want to go back to the game to reach the top ranking.

Matterfall ticks most of the boxes when it comes to a side-scrolling sci-fi game. Great visuals, great sounds, robot enemies and lots of jumping and shooting. It's rather short and doesn't have much replay value, but it you enjoy a good sci-fi game, then you should give this a go.

Despite some new gameplay approaches Matterfall still don't manage to merge from the shadows of the previous housemarque titles. The diverting title surprises you not very often and the hardest part of the game is gettting used to the new control elements of the game. If you're looking for a new twin-stick-shooter to pass some time you'll still enjoy Matterfall.

So somebody plays around with matter as well as prototype warmachines – below one of the biggest cities in the solar system. Things really go awry when the matter decides to get self aware and having prototype war robots at the ready just makes for a bad blend. So in the midst of history's biggest evacuation, they are sending in specialists to try and tidy up all the mess. You're one of these specialists. Welcome to Matterfall.

Matterfall is a fireworks display of an arcade game: bright, bombastic, and ultimately hollow. But while it may not sit front-and-centre of Housemarque’s modern-day arcade, it’s a visual extravaganza that’s still well worth seeing one time through.

The augments are fun to collect, and the bosses are a decent challenge but there isn't much to make you want to go back for more, especially with all that unnecessary Smart Matter Paraphernalia. Take that away and you'll have a much more fun and intense shooter.

Matterfall has been successful in presenting an action shooter which can increase the rush of adrenalin in your body! Yet, unfortunately, the game lacks content and is unable to keep you entertained for hours. However, it’s unfair to ignore its exceptional music and sound design. The combination of soundtracks and action shooter genre is the best part of the game!

Thanks to a good balance between berserk and entertaining activities, the new game from Housemarque will definitely trap you thanks to its unique style and a perfect control system.

Matterfall is perhaps the least essential Housemarque title in the PlayStation 4's catalogue, but it's still a cut above the majority of the competition.

Matterfall is a game filled with ideas and mechanics that seem fine on their own, but contradict and conflict with each other when added together. The experience is so short and stifled, that even with some enjoyable moments along the way, it's hard to recommend.

A Dashing experience that contains all the factors we are used to in a Housemarque game. Unfortunately, it lacks a unique identity and more content to brightly shine as one of the strongest titles for this studio.

In Matterfall there's a lot of explosions, tons of particles, fast paced action and an interesting mix of gameplay mechanics. Everything fits well with this Housemarque game but scarce content and lack of replayability refrain it from being a must.

At this point, it sounds redundant to say that Housemarque has created another excellent Twin Stick shooter. Matterfall is fast, intense and really fun. Even if its limited content prevents it from becoming one of Housemarque's best, it is a must-have for fans of the genre.

Admittedly, the overall quality of Matterfall hurts more than usual because we've seen exactly what Housemarque can do. The core game is fun, but mediocre platforming holds back the game's strengths of dashing and shooting. Controls seem fine on paper, but the inability to map the buttons means that there's a learning curve to the game that will result in many deaths and wrong moves. It may look and sound pretty, but with a short game length and a punishing leaderboard system, consumers may want to wait for a price drop before jumping in.

Matterfall is an engaging and at times, fascinating game which has honored Housemarque once again with its brilliant control and nearly flawless gameplay. Unfortunately, the enemies you'll face are not really active as you'd expect and are quite predictable, replaying the same level more than once can be quite boring and unlike their previous titles, the lack of content and the short length of the game, decreases the replay value.

If you can handle the uncomfortable controls, you'll be able to immerse yourself in some good old platformer shooting fun.

On the whole, Matterfall's presentation and gameplay are solid with enough twists to Housemarque's existing formula to make it a fun little distraction. If you're craving for an action-fuelled romp beyond the usual AAA, big budget releases, Matterfall is worth considering.
