Nidhogg 2 doesn't reinvent itself but rather just adds more to an already great multiplayer formula.

The gameplay of Nidhogg 2 is incredibly smooth and each button press flows into the next, removing the focus on the controller and allowing the player to soak in the numerous advances MESSHOF has made as they poured their time into making a new and refreshing version of their previous title.

Nidhogg 2 is a game that you're either going to “get” or won't. There's a lot of deep to what at first might seem like a shallow release, but you need to give it some time before it wins you over. Playing with friends is a great way to speed up this process, so I'd suggest you do that after completing at least one full run of the single player campaign (which shouldn't take you more than 40-50 minutes). If you liked the first game then you're going to love the gameplay for this one, although you might not like the change in the game's visuals.

Nidhogg 2 is a lot of fun when you're playing with other people, and not very much fun when playing in the single player mode. Graphically, some people may not find the game looks quite as hideous as others, but to those who do, know that you are not alone. Nidhogg 2 is, in short, a fun multiplayer release with some unnecessary components, and some lagging issues that sadly do it no favours.

If you put plenty of time into Nidhogg and you're pining for something to freshen it up, Nidhogg 2 should do the trick. If you're new to the series and on the look out for an excellent party game then I see no reason to look further than the budget-priced original. By making the original so fantastic, Messhof has fallen on its own sword in making a sequel.

Outrageous artwork aside, Nidhogg 2 is cut from the same cloth as Nidhogg. It attempts to enhance gameplay by offering more weapons and this was a successful move.

Nidhogg 2 is fun to play for a few rounds at a party, but it's not exactly the next EVO hit. It's a pick-up-and-play game with the potential for intense matches between friends, but that's about all it's good for. The game works, and none of its few weapons feel more powerful than its peer. The problem is that there's no reason to keep playing. Arcade mode isn't varied enough to make it worthy of more than a single playthrough. The base game doesn't have a ton of nuance either, so it's not really fun to go back and practice against the AI or online players. Nidhogg 2 is good, but I only recommend it for a party.

Nidhogg is back with muppet-like characters, new weapons, a new coat of paint, and not a lot else.

Nidhogg 2 isn’t a feature heavy game. It could use leaderboards, maybe more game modes, and more weapons, sure. But it’s about the frantic gameplay, the hilarious level design and flopping of bodies across the levels. It’s about laughing with the person you’re trying to skewer. And listen – any game that lets you fight inside the bowels of a dying Nidhogg and escape through its sphincter is alright by us.

Nidhogg 2 may not be as beautifully simple as its predecessor and the art-style and new weapons are an acquired taste. However, the combat, crazy pace of matches and sheer aesthetic makes for great fights, either alone or with friends.

Messhof Games was able to expand upon a simple concept in Nidhogg 2 without ruining what made the first game great. The new weapons are a welcome addition to the franchise, and the variety of maps prevents the experience from growing dull too quickly. However, it would have been nice had the developers put more thought and care into making the online play better, because as it stands right now, it simply isn't worth the hassle.

Everything is changed, but Nidhogg 2 is still fun and addictive

Nidhogg 2 is the madhouse on top of Nidhogg's foundation. Formidable swords and a low-fi aesthetic are swapped for a gleeful array of sharp objects and a ridiculous style that embraces the 90's grossest toys. Nidhogg's singular focus isn't lost or diluted, it's amplified with a jubilant response to skill and spontaneity.

At its core, Nidhogg 2 is still Nidhogg. And you can turn off the new weapons and still fence your way across a castle stage if you so desire. But unless you're a hardline hater of Nidhogg 2's sludgy aesthetic, the sequel enhances the formula across the board. Don't be put-off by Nidhogg 2's rainbow slop, there's still a silly white-knuckle, slay-your-friends action game underneath the mess.

Nidhogg 2‘s setbacks make it an inadvisable purchase for anything but local multiplayer. The local multiplayer is fantastic enough to carry this game. Nidhogg 2 succeeds in making a few very simple concepts wonderfully captivating. By combining intuitive controls with a healthy range of tricks and strategies, Nidhogg 2 is the very definition of “Easy to learn, hard to master.” It is a worthy investment for you and your friends, provided they're close by.

Nidhogg 2 is a prime example of how simplicity isn't always a bad thing; this is a deliciously compelling couch multiplayer experience that's both approachable and in-depth, potentially leading to dozens of hours of fun. The weak single-player offering and online lag are certainly low points, but the trippy visuals, chill soundtrack and frantic gameplay all combine to make this a recommendation for those of you looking for another great title for playing with friends; solo combatants may wish to exercise some caution, however.

Niddhog 2 has studied the lessons from its predecessor and makes its way into the Nintendo Switch catalogue as a fun and fluid multiplayer experience. It shines less when it comes to solo play, as the game feels a lot less motivating when there is only one player involved, but those looking for enjoyable local multiplayer sessions will find Niddhog 2 to be a satisfying choice.
