Nidhogg 2 doesn't reinvent itself but rather just adds more to an already great multiplayer formula.

Nidhogg 2 is a solid multi-player title that is bogged down by a handful of issues. The online play is currently a mess, the single player is lackluster at best and the new weapons do more harm than good. It's a testament to how rock solid the gameplay is, though, that the title is still worth checking out if you have friends willing to embrace its weirdness. For now, I'll stick with the original, though.

Messhof Games was able to expand upon a simple concept in Nidhogg 2 without ruining what made the first game great. The new weapons are a welcome addition to the franchise, and the variety of maps prevents the experience from growing dull too quickly. However, it would have been nice had the developers put more thought and care into making the online play better, because as it stands right now, it simply isn't worth the hassle.

Nidhogg 2 offers plenty of new content for fans of the original, and while its new art style isn’t for everyone, the game manages to build on the original’s level design and make for much more challenging melees that test your reflexes and friendships.

If you put plenty of time into Nidhogg and you're pining for something to freshen it up, Nidhogg 2 should do the trick. If you're new to the series and on the look out for an excellent party game then I see no reason to look further than the budget-priced original. By making the original so fantastic, Messhof has fallen on its own sword in making a sequel.

Nidhogg 2 seems simple at first, but it's deep and content rich enough to keep you interested. It also sports beautiful pixel-art graphical style. Don't forget to bring friends, though.

With a few caveats, Nidhogg 2 is the kind of sequel I had hoped developer Mark Essen and Messhoff Games would make. It’s an evolution of what made the original great that keeps most of its best elements, and doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It takes the series into more of a 16-bit style. It also mixes up the formula a little bit, with a host of lush new environments, new weapons, and silly-looking, customizable characters.

Nidhogg 2 is a unique little fighter that I think anyone will have a blast playing. Whether it be with friends or online, an insane amount of fun can be had. I would temper expectations if you are only looking to play Nidhogg 2 as a single-player experience though, due to the shoddy implementation of the AI.

Nidhogg is as viceral & fun as you can imagine. One of the best multiplayer games, but an awful proposal for single player.

If you have a few friends looking for a fun game to play, Nidhogg 2 is the perfect choice. If you're looking to jump online, I would advise against it.

Nidhogg 2 is a decent sequel to the first title. Playing with friends will provide you an experience so exciting that'd wipe out the disappointment caused by the short length of the single player. Though changes done in the gameplay are not as much as expected and the combat is still as simple as before, but the all-new graphics and visual effects, also the excessive violence, has made Nidhogg 2 a unique and interesting game.

A charming fighting game that offers a great experience in co-op. It might be short in length but you will be able to enjoy a good amount of replay value in a party or with friends.

Built very heavily upon the mechanics of its predecessor, Nidhogg 2 mostly aims to presenting a new flare and new options...but those options make the experience harder to get into, producing a game mostly for people who already played and loved the first entry.

Just like the original, Nidhogg 2 is at its best when played in multiplayer, with little else to recommend it.

Whereas the original Nidhogg was a wickedly fast and immediately loveable party game, Nidhogg 2 pushes the boundaries and arrives with mixed results.

At its core, Nidhogg 2 is still Nidhogg. And you can turn off the new weapons and still fence your way across a castle stage if you so desire. But unless you're a hardline hater of Nidhogg 2's sludgy aesthetic, the sequel enhances the formula across the board. Don't be put-off by Nidhogg 2's rainbow slop, there's still a silly white-knuckle, slay-your-friends action game underneath the mess.

In the end, I was pretty disappointed with Nidhogg 2. After a few hours of playing I don't see myself going back to it any time soon. The weapon changes and graphic changes were enough to turn me off. Although the game can be fun to play for a few minutes at a time, all of the extra additions were just a little too much. I'll stick to playing the original, I think.

Messhof has crafted a sequel that manages to surpass their 2014 masterpiece. Offering more weapons and gameplay options, a fully featured singleplayer campaign, a new art style and an incredible soundtrack, Nidhogg 2 proves that sometimes, more is better.

Given that this game shares such a strong base with its predecessor, it'd be easy to get whether or not this is a sequel or a rehash, but the point is that Nidhogg did what it did perfectly and enjoyably. It was a simple game and concept that was best unadorned and uncluttered with other mechanics, modes, etc. Nidhogg 2 is fully aware of that and instead of changing what already works. It adds more in ways that don't detract from the core of the game, instead choosing to give it a healthy dose of identity, character and zany atmosphere that will stick with you much longer than bland colored square men in basic environments. It plays beautifully and the quick kills and high tension matches make for a perfect two-player experience.

The endless fun of poking and prodding your way to victory and rushing to the next playable area of the screen is still the foundation of Nidhogg 2 and it will be the key reason why you'll find yourself struggling to put the game down for long. Going toe-to-toe with the game's ridiculously easy AI in arcade mode is no fun but hopping online and duking it out with other players is exactly how this game is meant to be enjoyed.
