Overcooked: Special Edition Reviews

Overcooked: Special Edition is ranked in the 63rd percentile of games scored on OpenCritic.

If not for Overcooked Special Edition's performance issues when solo or in co-op, the game would get a score to that of its original review. Surely the framerate issues are going to be patched out, and as previously mentioned aren't too much of a bother, but they are frequent and can cause missteps in the kitchen. The performance issues are only a word of caution, but not meant to deter you from what this delightfully chaotic game has to offer. The Nintendo Switch is the perfect platform for this game, but needs patching before it gets fully recommended. Once it is, the Switch lets you can bring it anywhere and start cooking up some fun with anyone.

Overcooked is a cooking simulator mixed with frustratingly fun hell. Best played with friends – doesn’t actually break relationships.

In Overcooked: Special Edition, developer Ghost Town Games has achieved something special. Beneath the surface of this crazy culinary adventure is an experience that is outrageously funny to play with friends, that, even when your kitchen is burning down and the fire extinguisher out of reach, will never fail to raise a smile. It’s a perfect fit for Nintendo Switch, and a game that you need to have in your life – it will be all the better for it. For, there is nothing in the world as contagious as laughter.

Up until the bitter end, the diversity of levels and concepts is glorious. The fast-paced cooking might get stressful, but that also makes success all the more tasty. If you can find the right team of cooks and overlook a lower framerate, Overcooked on Switch is glorious.

Overcooked: Special Edition is a challenging but extremely fun game that gets better as you add more people to the mix. It holds a certain charm that is hard to find in other co-op games with focus on team-based gameplay.

An interesting idea that is lots of fun given the right crowd, but despite its best efforts to make for intriguing level design, the more bells and whistles added to the kitchen layout, the more room there is for frustration to creep in. Overcooked! Special Edition is the best value version so far, with DLC already included, and those that enjoyed it before will enjoy it again. However, just be warned that solo players should steer clear, and those wanting multiplayer fun need to make sure those in tow are not inept at juggling numerous tasks under tense conditions or else the entire group will just quickly start to hate the game and each other…

Overcooked will either have you in hysterics, or hating your friends. Either way, you'll have a blast!

Overcooked Special Edition on the Nintendo Switch is a fantastic slice of old school local player co-operative fun.

Anyone looking for a fun party game or a fun cooperative Switch experience should pick up Overcooked immediately. Unfortunately, the exciting nature of the game will wear off for those who don't have others to play with, which should surely be a consideration for anyone thinking of picking the game up.

Overcooked: Special Edition is a great co-op game that takes advantage of the Switch portability and Joy-Cons. Sadly its framerate issues prevent from getting a higher score.

At a time when couch co-op games are an endangered species, Overcooked doubles down on the game mode by serving up one of the more fun cooperative gaming experiences I’ve played. The emphasis on couch co-op, combined with lack of online play, admittedly makes the solo experience feel lackluster. Little glitches and control niggles can also make the more hectic stages frustrating. Overall, however, Overcooked Special Edition is a great multiplayer experience that is a great fit with Nintendo’s hybrid home and portable game console.

All in all, Overcooked is an absolute must-buy for anybody looking for a fantastic party game to play with friends. The wacky visuals and chaotic gameplay make it an ideal game for local co-op, and there's plenty of content to work through. Although there are some disappointing launch issues with the framerate (reflected in our scoring), we still give this one a strong recommendation overall; it's a title that perfectly nails what makes local multiplayer games so fun.

The core premise and style of Overcooked is a perfect fit for Nintendo's portable console, but its technical performance ruins the experience. There aren't many issues that couldn't be fixed with a patch, but as it stands, Overcooked offers an exciting cooperative experience which is quickly hampered by performance issues.

As fun as the original version of the game but with more levels and some added flaws that makes this Special Edition good but not better.

Overcooked and the Nintendo Switch are really a perfect match of frantic co-op cooking and a games console that's all about taking games on the go and sharing them with people. Right now it's difficult to wholeheartedly recommend this version though, given the widely reported frame rate issues. Here's hoping they can cook up a fix sooner rather than later.

Overcooked is one of the freshest couch co-op games I've ever played. It's a perfect blend of strategy and chaos, asking you and your teammates to think on your feet as its smart and strange levels do everything they possibly can to make sure you are shouting at each other. The Switch port has some framerate and rumble issues that keep it from matching the best versions available, but for local multiplayer fun it's hard to beat.
