So, then, if you’ve come to the end of Metroid Dread — which, judging by social media over the course of the last few days, a fair few of you have already — don’t despair; your sci-fi action-exploration adventures don’t have to be over just yet! In fact, they never have to end if you don’t want them to — A Robot Named Fight is just waiting to drag you into its meaty world and keep you there for a very long time indeed. I’m certainly in no hurry to escape from its clutches.

A Robot Named Fight! is an interesting take on two established genres. While it doesn't result in total success due to occasionally troublesome controls and some balancing problems that can cause the game to feel like it's lacking variety, it's still enjoyable enough that you will want to replay it multiple times to see what else can be discovered.

A decent attempt at recreating the magic of the Metroidvania genre, A Robot Named Fight! deserves a shot from fans of the genre.

The comparisons to Nintendo's much-loved Metroid franchise might seem excessive, but A Robot Named Fight makes little effort to differentiate itself from the source material it has been inspired by. What it does manage to do is provide endless replay value with its procedural generated platform action, unique items and large variety of enemies. The co-op mode is also a welcomed inclusion. The trade-off here, as mentioned, is no real story or character development beyond the basics to motivate you to save the day and the repetitive nature associated with permadeath. If you can look past this, what's on offer is a satisfying alternative to the space adventures of Samus.

A Robot Named Fight is a procedurally generated Metroidvania with roguelite elements in which you will be able to slowly but surely make some progress with every new run you do. The variety of enemies, items and bosses and the randomization will keep you playing over and over without ever having the same experience twice. If you're a fan of the 2D Metroidvania genre and are up for trying something different, then be sure to check this one out on Nintendo Switch since I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

A Robot Named Fight is an interesting roguelike, combining that genre's pros and cons with what's essentially a Super Metroid framework. While I suspect your mileage may vary, I can't deny that it's a fun, if imperfect, experience.

Despite its ridiculous name, A Robot Named Fight! could be a sleeper hit. It made a bad first impression for me, but over time it grew on me with the things it did ever so right. It even blends two genres that theoretically shouldn't fit together, yet somehow in this context and with the clever implementation of its gadgets, a far more enjoyable experience. It's by no means perfect, but with great ideas it deserves at least a look for yourself.

A Robot Named Fight is clearly a modern interpretation of Super Metroid but with a roguelike structure.

Even if it's developed by just a single person, A Robot Named Fight! is a great example of what passion and dedication in gaming design can accomplish. A must-have in the Metroidvania and Roguelite genre, especially if you want to play it on the go thanks to the Nintendo Switch.

Regardless of some quirks and small issues A Robot Named Fight is plain brilliant and consistently pulls me into a “just one more run” mentality with ease. To a degree feeling like a new Metroid-ish chapter full of exploration and surprises every time you play makes it pretty unique and consistently challenging. Of course people who are less accustomed to the way roguelikes switch things up every time may struggle with this, though since the seed is shown for every run you do you could opt to keep entering it so you could play the same instance repeatedly. Truly taking the Metroid experience to the next level, A Robot Named Fight is easy to recommend to anyone who was ever a fan of the original series.

A Robot Named Fight! is a "great game, BUT…" kind of deal, that won't appeal to just anyone. It's actually highly recommended, but only as long as you can deal with a metroidvania with a perma-death mechanic - and one that won't exactly win any awards for its variety and replay value.

If you have been itching for a Metroidvania game with a good sense of humor and a new level of challenge, A Robot Named Fight is worth the investment of time. Your metal will be tested as you throw a lot of robots at a ton of meat, but the Megabeast must be vanquished and its secrets must be revealed - in at least one of its multiple endings!

If Super Metroid had pretty great procedurally-generated levels and roguelike elements, it would basically be A Robot Named Fight!

A Robot Named Fight! is extremely fun and rewarding when you win, but frustrating when you lose. It's a game meant for more hardcore gamers, and reflects that in its gameplay.

Overall, I was quite impressed with A Robot Named Fight. It provided a healthy challenge, tons of unexpected variety and just enough exploration to satisfy fans of the genre. It’s clear to me that Matt truly understands the factors that make this genre great, and did his level best to include all of them in this, his very first game. While the base journey is pretty short, the various achievements and the need to find everything keeps me playing. I would venture that even Sundered, another fantastic Metroidvania with random generation, isn’t quite so adept at procedural generation as this one. For only $9.99 (or 25% cheaper for the next few days) this game is one any Metroidvania fan should own. I can only hope that it does well in sales, since I’d love to see it make its way to other consoles, as well as maybe getting some DLC. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and beat the Megabeast for the third time and finish getting 100% of those achievements!

A Robot Named Fight combines a blaster-centric Metroidvania with a roguelite and works wonderfully.
