Ultimately A Hat in Time is a quirky platformer featuring a stellar cast of characters, unique levels that are fun to explore and balanced gameplay. However, the Nintendo Switch version has an inconsistent frame rate, a poor camera system and long load times which put it behind other versions.

At its heart, A Hat in Time is a lovely platformer that wants to be a joy to play, but its technical shortcomings are far too big to ignore.

In all I'd recommend A Hat in Time as a quick pick up game when there's a lull in the market (which 2017 definitely hasn't had), but not at it's current price.

Playing through A Hat in Time was an experience that made me question the idea of a specific term - ‘Inspired'. It's clearly built as a homage to titles like Super Mario and Luigi's Mansion yet struggles to stand out on its own because of it. It certainly made me smile from time to time, but most of that time was also spent thinking how a finer experience could be achieved by simply playing the games that inspired it. An issue presented by a certain other homage earlier this year.

Dodgy controls nearly ruin this lovably hyperactive ball of imagination.

A Hat in Time excels with an overwhelming charm in its writing and art direction that overcomes any missteps in these areas. Its core, smooth mechanics also benefit from promising ideas, but none of them prevent the game from being pulled into a wormhole of mediocre level design and objectives. The potential for phenomenal platforming and exploration is here, but for every positive, there seems to be a negative in A Hat in Time.

While it doesn't provide anything new for the platforming genre, A Hat in Time is a decent game but it has the potential to be a much better experience if it started to provide its own ideas.

I feel like I've been a bit hard on A Hat in Time when I do find it to be a charming and fun game. I had hoped for some more originality to be seen in the game's mechanics or level design, but the lack thereof doesn't hinder the quality of the experience. Nothing in A Hat in Time is going to change how you think about 3D platformers, but if you know that ahead of time and are still looking for an enjoyable, cute collectaton, there are definitely worse options to choose from.

A Hat in Time is nothing you haven't seen before. Solid gameplay, a charming environment, and 8 and a half hours of classic platforming fun.

A Hat in Time is a delightful 3D platformer, with tight controls, some of the best humour seen in the genre to date and compelling scenarios driving the collectathon aspect of the game.

A Hat In Time is a solid 3D platformer. It's not as magical as the games it's striving to emulate, but it is loveable and fills a void sorely missing on consoles.

A Hat in Time won't wow you out of the gates, but if you can plough through the mud, you'll find an enjoyable 3D platformer with a goofy personality.

A Hat in Time may not revolutionize 3D platforming but that doesn't stand in its way of this being a fun game which fans of the style will undoubtedly enjoy. Despite technical issues which can harm the experience to a certain extent, this is an overall well designed work and which is well worth the time and effort that players put into it.

A Hat in Time is a love-letter to the platform genre of the 90's. It's far from as perfect as Super Mario Odyssey, but it manage to be both charming and entertaining – and is almost a must-play for those who have grown up with this type of games.
