Super Lucky's Tale is a generic and forgettable 3D platformer. Xbox fans deserve better.

Super Lucky's Tale is a fine 3D platformer.

If this sounds pretty grim so far, I want to back it up a little. Despite how negative I sound to this point, Super Lucky's Tale isn't a bad game.

For the price and the fact that this is the only brand new title designed with the Xbox One X in mind releasing with the console, Super Lucky's Tale is worth your time. It would also provide plenty of fun for all ages on the Xbox One family of consoles and Windows 10 PC's.

Almost every moment of Super Lucky's Tale allows for the pure joy of platforming when you aren't annoyed by its limited camera. It's worth noting that the main game is extremely short to beat, but there are enough optional levels, puzzles and collectables to complete that will easily double or even triple your time with it.

Despite all of the minor gameplay upgrades in Super Lucky's Tale, I actually had a better time playing as Lucky in VR last year. It was really cool to be able to "peek" around things and control the camera yourself, and despite all of the claims that "platformers don't benefit from VR" I couldn't disagree more. If stripping that is what Playful Corp needs to do to reach a bigger audience so be it, but a version with optional VR would have been ideal.

There's definitely some potential in Super Lucky's Tale but the content here is limited and locked behind a forced search for hidden secrets

Super Lucky's Tale is a funny, joyous game with excellent mechanics and great characters. Microsoft has finally found their platformer.

Super Lucky's Tale is a charming and sweet indie platformer that provides hours of retro platforming joy. It's probably had far too much weight put upon its shoulders as the Xbox One X's sole launch title, and is by no means perfect; a fact that's been amplified by the recent antics of a dungaree-wearing plumber. However, while the genre has undoubtedly moved on, taken on its own merit Super Lucky's Tale is simple, inescapable fun.

It's all such a disappointment. I very much wanted to like Lucky, because the Xbox could use a decent answer to Nintendo in the 3D platformer genre. Unfortunately, Super Lucky's Tale definitely isn't it.

Super Lucky's Tale is a marked improvement on it's predecessor and a competent love letter to the great platformers of the 90s. The controls feel great, the level variety is strong, and the game feels appropriately priced for what you get. It'll never compete with the likes of Mario, Banjo and Donkey Kong, but it's certainly several steps (or jumps) in the right direction. Worth a shot, especially for the younger crowd. Just beware of the difficulty spikes.

A complete and joyful platformer, recommended for the little ones or those who expect classic playability. Its lack of ideas and several technical constraints hamper its success.

Super Lucky's Tale looks and sounds pleasant, and its charming world and characters will appeal to younger audiences. However, despite getting the basics right, some gameplay and overall design concerns lead the game down a few wrong foxholes.

‎Super Lucky's Tale is a very fun game for both young and old. There are a total of four worlds to play in that you spend between two and three hours each. This also depends very much on how fanatically you are hunting coins and four-leaf clovers.‎

This sequel to the VR-exclusive Lucky’s Tale shoulders the responsibility of launching a new Xbox hardware iteration and also proving itself in the world of traditional 3D platformers, and does a spectacularly average job of both

Super Lucky's Tale is the child-pleaser we've been looking for the Xbox One catalogue. An honest and modest title that never forgets that easy doesn't mean simple.

Amongst the like of Super Mario Odyssey, Yooka-Laylee, Sonic Mania, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and even Cuphead, Super Lucky's Tale trails far behind. If you only own an Xbox One and are desperate for some platforming, then you'll have a decent time with Super Lucky's Tale
