The Mummy Demastered is a fun Metroidvania released as a tie-in to The Mummy, and I definitely recommend you play this one. It's only $19.99 and offers more than enough content to justify its price tag, not to mention that it might opens the door for WayForward to work on games for the rest of the Universal monster revival. If you're a fan of the Metroidvania genre then you're going to enjoy playing through this one since it just feels right – itplays like a Metroidvania, looks great and has a solid soundtrack as well.

Aside from the simple fact it exists, the biggest surprise about The Mummy Desmastered is that it's actually quite good.

When I get a WayForward Technologies game in my hands, I usually know I'm in for a treat. Except this time around I was really disappointed with what they had to offer. A generic Metroidvania-styled game, based on the failed Mummy reboot and completely devoid of any enjoyment. The gameplay is boring, the story is uninspiring and for the first time ever, I had to force myself to complete a WayForward title.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, and you shouldn't judge this game based on its movie tie-in; with The Mummy Demastered, WayForward may have reached its apex. It deserves to stand on its own as one of the best recent examples of not only a pixel art aesthetic, but as an excellent combination of run 'n gunning, platforming and exploration. The game benefits from paying homage to multiple 16-bit ancestors rather than strictly sticking to its celluloid source material; The Mummy Demastered is a polished, accomplished and satisfying adventure that will entertain more than just Metroidvania fans.

Even in the face of it's most frustrating elements, The Mummy Demastered isn't a bad game. It's just disappointing, more reminiscent of WayForward's okay past licensed work than any of their more transcendent Shantae games.

The Mummy Demastered has small issues that are appropriate for the era it recalls, but they are quickly overshadowed by the excellent gameplay and feel of exploration and discovery amid blasting your way from room to room. The Mummy Demastered is wonderfully executed and full of surprises. WayForward didn't just make " another one of those". There are real and meaningful changes to the formula you wouldn't expect, and flipping them on their head is well worth the price of admission.

A thunderous Metroidvania effort that sublimely marries the timeless design of yesteryear with some of the best decisions of modern game design, The Mummy Demastered is not only a great title but also one of the genuinely best surprises of the year.

Those complaints aside, I enjoyed my time with The Mummy Demastered from near beginning to end. (My initial playthrough took four hours but I still have half of the 50 optional "relics" to suss out.) This game doesn't do anything meaningfully new or original for metroidvania fans, but everything here is solid and WayForward got the fundamentals right... in a licensed Mummy adaptation, of all things.

After pushing through the first two hours of few interesting upgrades or weapons, The Mummy Demastered becomes an above-average title that tickles the fancy of those missing classic Metroid gameplay. It's not perfect, but certainly enough to whet the appetite of metroidvania fans.

Even though it does not provide an innovative experience, The Mummy Demastered demonstrates the right way to redeem a classic formula. It's a fun and formidable adventure/action game, albeit a bit shorter than I'd like.

The Mummy Demastered is the perfect kind of filler game between bigger titles; and one that is damn fun to play despite its few shortcomings.

With gorgeously faithful 16-bit graphics and a catchy soundtrack to boot, it's a wonderful addition to one of my favourite genres.

WayForward once again showed how to do a platformer, despite the fact that the game was created by movie universe, the developers tell their story of what is happening, The Mummy Demastered does not suffer from the syndrome game adaptation, which undoubtedly is a huge plus for fans as a great game, and for fans of movie universe Mummy.

It's more an unofficial Castlevania game than a movie tie-in, but if you can handle the high difficultly level this is an effective substitute for the real thing.

This might be the first time I think the license here might actually be doing the game harm then the game itself.

The Mummy Demastered is an attractive side-scrolling action game from WayForward that tries to makes the most of a gloomy license.

It looks great, it plays great and it comes with that one ingredient that always makes for a decent experience – an addictively teasing quality.
