.hack//G.U. Last Recode is a remaster of PlayStation 2 games... and it shows. The resolution is crisp and razor-sharp, but there is no hiding how basic these character models are. Lead characters fare best, but most NPCs are hopelessly devoid of detail or articulation - typically stuck with frozen expressions, too. On Nintendo Switch, .hack//G.U. Last Recode runs a perfectly stable 30 frames per second. The new bonus chapter is an epilogue where gamers can find out what has happened to all the characters that they have grown attached to. It is a welcome addition and lasts a few hours, but is ultimately unnecessary.

Packaged on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the brand and brought to the hybrid of the House of Kyoto to celebrate the twentieth, .hack//G.U. Last Recode for Nintendo Switch is a good opportunity to relive in portability the epic poem of Haseo and the other Epitaph Users, but also to approach the brand for the first time and rediscover one of the most precious works to bear the signature of the developer CyberConnect2.

.Hack//G.U. Last Recode is a huge walk down memory lane that offers tons of content and replayability. The game does suffer from some repetitive features and a lack of strategic enemies. But overall .Hack//G.U. Last Recode is a great JRPG that feels perfectly suited to the Nintendo Switch.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode isn't a bad game, it's just aggressively mediocre. These three games weren't fantastic when they were new and, surprise surprise, they still aren't great now. Repetitive dungeon design, extremely easy combat, and an often nonsensical narrative prove to be this release's greatest weaknesses, holding it back from fulfilling the interesting concept of its premise. Still, if you want the nostalgia trip or for some reason aren't satisfied with the near-bottomless list of more interesting RPGs on the Switch, it may be worth the punt. We'd give this one a light recommendation, then, but would say you're better off picking up the remasters of Final Fantasy XII or Shin Megami Tensei III if you're looking for a worthwhile sixth-generation RPG. If it's specifically the concept of a single player MMO that interests you, then either CrossCode or one of the Xenoblade releases will scratch that itch far better.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode is extremely enjoyable on Nintendo Switch, despite some technical compromises needed.

It feels a little funny to review .hack//G.U. Last Recode for the Switch. Diehard .hack// fans like myself just needed to be told when and where to buy it with no questions asked, and those who have never dipped their toes into the title (or franchise as a whole) have three current platforms to choose from with a basic understanding of what one can reasonably expect from any of them. To that end, I’d like to close the review on this note: .hack//G.U. Last Recode is worth the money no matter which platform you buy it on, but if you want to support some of the most creative and dedicated developers out there, pick up .hack//G.U. Last Recode on the Switch — don’t let Cyberconnect2’s blood, sweat, and tears go to waste.

All in all, if you enjoy anime and story-heavy JRPGs, you’ll probably enjoy this title as well. If you prefer games that feature better gameplay to cutscene ratios, you should probably play something else.

Character depth and a plot that stands the test of time. .Hack//G.U. Last Recode on the Switch is a masterfully ported game that will be sure to engage you for hours on end. You will wish you were in "The World" for real. The Switch does have some hiccups here and there from frame stutters to wonky aspect ratio messing up the mini map.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode is worth your time, especially as you get four games for the price of one with this collection, and each title is a strong effort. It'll keep you occupied, especially during a period where there aren't many new JRPGs out. For everyone's sake though, we can just refer to this collection as Last Recode rather than .hack//G.U. Last Recode, right?

.hack // G.U. Last Recode is a good opportunity to try the popular PS2 series in a more pleasant wrapper and with the correct game changes that make your life in a virtual world more dynamic, but at the same time retain the charm of the original. If you like jRPGs with an interesting storyline, simple and understandable action-mechanics and a powerful soundtrack, then this compilation is sure to please you.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode is really for the fans. The ability to go through the whole trilogy with overpowered characters is perfect for those who want to reminisce without the grind, and the bonus fourth episode adds a natural closure to the series. It becomes a little harder for new fans to get used to some of the JRPG tropes and the meandering pace of the first episode, but things pick up later, so it's worthwhile to stick with it. All in all, those interested in a title that most likely influenced other anime like Sword Art Online should definitely check out .hack//G.U. Last Recode.

Sure, it mainly relies on nostalgia – which may make people who never played the original a bit harder to win over – but the sheer amount of content available on disc and the intriguing story that ties it all together does an admirable job of making up for its lack of modern features.

.hack//G.U. still a great RPG. Last Recode not only opens the franchise to a new group of players with a great package and also some extras that definitely fans can enjoy. Even if the enhancements aren't perfect, reminds everyone of some games that aren't as popular in this generation.

Last Recode in my opinion is worth trying out and I do hope that Namco Bandai consider doing something similar for the first series, as those too are extremely expensive and were never released digitally.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode is an amazing entry point for new players and a very rich package for long time fans. In other words, it deserves to be enjoyed by everyone. All changes and additions made to the games are justifiable and the new volume revitalize the franchise. This collection shows how remasters should be done.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode's intended audience is almost certainly established fans. It's a solid remaster that looks great and runs smoothly. But it's still a dated JRPG that dominates dozens of hours with sub-par combat and repetitive beats. If you have never experienced The World, it's unlikely that Last Recode will pull you in. For those that never wanted to log out, it's a decent way to reconnect.

The .hack//G.U. trilogy was one of my absolute favorite sagas ten years ago, and playing it again in high resolution has been an absolute joy.
