Mutant Football League is crass, silly and stupid fun - but the emphasis there is on fun. More often than not, I enjoyed my time with the game, even though it is light years behind the Madden series on a technical level. So if you are strictly here for the football gameplay, you will probably be disappointed. However, if are more interested in announcers who swear and players who explode, Mutant Football League should be just what you're looking for.

MFL is just too in-depth to be fun to the average casual, Brutal Sports loving gamer and too silly for the average simulation lover. I do not feel I can recommend the game to anyone but the niche group that sits between the two.

Overall I feel this is a genre that I thought would never be brought back, but I so glad it did. This game will provide endless hours of entertainment as you challenge yourself to the different fields with obstacles like razor blades on the 40 yard line to holes in the field filled with fire. There seems to be something new to every stadium, every team and every mode. It is definitely something that any fan of the NFL Blitz games should pick up and is super friendly to any newcomer to the genre. It is definitely one that I will keep playing for quite some time to come both online and off.

Mutant Football League sits within this limbo where it looks at what it can be, and just shrugs. To be fair, if somebody were to ask me if they should buy this game, I’d shrug too. It’s not the best game on the market in this genre, and I’m sure it’s not the worst. It’s just a mediocre attempt at making a spoof-esque game.

Perhaps it's fitting that "Mutant Football League" is a little rough around the edges and has some punishing characteristics. The game is brash, self-aware, and best suited for an older audience. The carnage inflicted is thoroughly entertaining and strategically the game gets better as its nuances become better understood. With "Mutant Football League," the dirtiest trick of all was making fans of the original wait 24 years for the sequel.

With fun on-field action, excellent visuals and a number of modes to choose from, Mutant Football League is the best arcade football game since NFL Street 2.

The arcade focus is fine, but this doesn't coalesce into a long-lasting, memorable experience. It treads mostly on its raunchiness and doesn't have the substance to match its gross style. Even on a system without Madden, Mutant Football League is too rough around the edges to be worthwhile.

Mutant Football League is a cheap and poorly executed arcade sports game.

Mutant Football League is mindless fun, which is all an arcade football game should be, but outside of the grotesque humor there is nothing else to really latch onto other than the bare-bones gameplay and lack of gameplay features.

A retro revival given a modern coat of paint, Mutant Football League sticks to its 16-bit roots and showcases the funnier, gorier, side of American football.

It's a shame the only modern football game released on the Nintendo Switch is a pun-filled nightmare. It may be Halloween, but this game is no treat.

Yes, it's vulgar, it's crude, and it's often profane. Be that as it may, Mutant Football League is probably the best football game available on the PC today.

Mutant Football League is a nice throwback to those games. The problems lie in that it feels sorely lacking in the presentation department. I would love to see it do well enough to improve upon the foundation, but for $20 it is hard not to recommend for fans that have nostalgia for those classic titles.

Mutant Football League faithfully recreates the arcade football games of decades past in almost every way.

Like it or not, Madden NFL 18 is still by far the best American Football game on the PlayStation 4, but if you fancy something a little sillier then Mutant Football League is not a bad shout at all. It plays similarly to the iconic EA series, but its aggressive playbook and irreverent sense of humour make it a fun alternative for a few downs – just don't expect the appeal to last long into overtime.

Nit-picky things aside, you end up with a game that plays easier than Madden, is downright hilarious, and won't break the bank to purchase. It really could use a full set of teams (then maybe some fake ones) and players that can speak English, but it doesn't take long for the game to remind you why you are playing in the first place – to kick the snot out of your opponent by any means necessary.

I primarily played the Nintendo Switch version of Mutant Football League, and the quick matches are a perfect pairing for portable play. While the port doesn't look quite as stunning as its other versions, the personality of each stadium still gets across clearly and it manages to looks good on the handheld's screen. It's also a fully featured title as it has online play in addition to local multiplayer (that can be played with one Joy-Con apiece). Considering the lack of football games on the device, it's easily the best way to experience some gridiron action.

For what was initially a failed Kickstarter by the series' original creator to make it to a final release like this is impressive in its own right, and it is one of the few arcade-centric football experiences currently on the market. Mutant Football League is fast, dirty fun, and definitely one of my favorite sports games in recent years.
