Fourattic have given us a wholesome, humble, and most importantly fun video game that you’ll simply adore from start to finish. No doubt about it, Crossing Souls is the indie game to beat in 2018.

When I started, however, I didn’t have initial expectations; it was my interest in its art style that drew me. I still loved everything about it, I still feel connected to the characters I played, the simple storyline, the amazing music, humor, and the shout-outs to 80s pop culture (Guys, I found Master Splinter and the Turtles’ pizza-stacked hideout). In other words, play Crossing Souls just for a good time, but don’t expect something grandiose. It’s simple, quick, but it’s fun.

Crossing Souls leverages the classics from the 80's while telling a powerful tale of the space between life and death.

Crossing Souls is teeming with personality, even if it all isn’t originally its own. It expertly weaves the nostalgic tones of 80s media, covering its lesser parts to an extent. The crew may not be as lively as the environments they find themselves in, but utilizing them for general platforming and combat is enjoyable enough. Crossing Souls will no doubt pique the interest of those currently enveloped in this re-emerging stylized culture.

Crossing souls is a great little nostalgia trip back to the 80's with a lot of references both in the story and randomly scattered around the place. The pixel art style of the game fits the game for the most part with the cutscenes being the stand-out feature for me. The puzzles are great and some really get you thinking, but the combat does get a tad annoying as you approach the final boss due to the time it takes to get back into the action when you lose.

Crossing Souls is a game that wears its pixelated heart proudly on its cut-off denim sleeve. From its blocky character sprites to its neon-saturated title screen and grainy, static-filled VHS-esque cutscenes, it’s obvious the game is geared to players with a fondness for the era that gave rise to such riches as E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Bonkers fruit chews, and the ever-looming specter of nuclear annihilation.

Crossing Souls is a love letter to the 80’s with a charming cast of characters that’s unfortunately held back by weak combat mechanics.

Crossing Souls is a product that uses the nostalgia and tropes of already established properties and clashes them together to build its own solid base. It innovates little but succeeds in all its attempts to introduce or mix new elements into these formulas of games and storytelling in the 1980's. A nostalgic journey that's both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

Much of this game is simply bad—the platforming is bad, the puzzles are bad, the combat is passable at best, and even the graphics manage to create real problems. That’s to say nothing of the minigames and boss fights, either, which range from trivial to outright infuriating. Sometimes you’ll play a game and notice it fraying at the edges, but Crossing Souls is in a more advanced state of disrepair.

The artistic flair the game opens with gives way to a lot of mediocrity in the story and gameplay department, which makes the game wane between mildly amusing and boring. With more time spent fleshing out all of the main cast, as well as smoothing the combat, and improving some of the puzzles I think it could have been a much better game.

Crossing Souls is filled to the brim with 80s nostalgia, from movie references to a stereotyped cast, so much that it forgets the most important aspect: to have a soul of its own.

Crossing Souls may not be a perfect game, but damn it, it sure as hell tries. I definitely recommend fans of the late 80's/90's cartoons and great adventure movies should play this game if you haven't already. It's a fun ride with memorable characters and events that may warrant that extra playthrough to get all of the collectibles.

Crossing Souls is a solid retro inspired 80's love letter to all our favorite shows and movies from that era. The gameplay and some of the dialogue don't always work, but the nostalgia should be enough to make for an enjoyable experience.

Fourattic first game is a great adventure of friendship a-la-Stranger Things. Even if sometimes the mechanics aren't as tight as other games and the story doesn't try anything new, still a fun experience for new and veteran players.

You could sketch Crossing Souls on a napkin, and it would probably be a smarter, more inclusive game. But I won’t ask you too. I’m off to cut down Young Sheldon and bury Crossing Souls next to him where the soil is dead.

The glue that would ideally hold this experience together is a thorough understanding and love of 80s pop culture, though there are some scattered modern references to be had as well...

Crossing Souls tries to channel the camaraderie of The Goonies, the whimsy of Back to the Future and the magic of E.T. and combine it all into one unforgettable video game. Safe to say, it achieves this – and a whole lot more.

Crossing Souls is one of the most disappointing games I've played where something wasn't broken or technically flawed. Fourattic relies far too much on nostalgia, hoping that rehashing gameplay mechanics and storytelling of the 80's alone will make this a good game - but it can't and it doesn't.
