Kirby's games never seem fair on the enemies but this tiresome and poorly balanced co-op platformer offers little chance of fun for them or you.

While it looks lovely and isn't a bad game by any means, Star Allies is aimed at a very specific age group, and most others will find it far too easy and, sadly, rather dull.

Kirby's powers are diluted when spread out across four players, yielding a more carefree experience.

Teamwork doesn't quite make the dream work in 'Kirby Star Allies.

Star Allies isn't bad, it's just dull. Perhaps that's worse.

"Kirby's Switch debut trusts in old tricks and co-op."

Overall, Kirby Star Allies sticks too close to the safe boundaries with its conservative design choices. This is all but a blip in the series' long history, and I am hopeful that HAL Laboratory will be able to bring back to its former glory.

Kirby will not be one of the most challenging games that you will play this year. However, it is fun and definitely can pass the time with a friend or two. If you’re a fan of Kirby, this game will give you more of the same Kirby that we know and love, don’t expect it to hold your attention for long though.

While it has a lot of star power with all of its characters and abilities which are sure to please the hardcore Kirby fanbase, this new Switch adventure certainly won’t be winning any awards for innovation.

Kirby Star Allies brings some of the most trademark elements of the Kirby series, including the extravagant visual look and the always growing set of abilities of the title character. On the other hand, it pushes the series' easy-going difficulty setting too far and sets the threshold too low for the players to feel any challenge and in the end, this ends up harming the experience more than helping the player.

It would take a monumental effort to make a Kirby game “un-fun.” Kirby Star Allies isn't ruined because of the allies mechanic, it still functions as an enjoyable Kirby game.

While it's not a bad game by any means, Kirby Star Allies for the Nintendo Switch is far too easy and does little to evolve the established Kirby formula.

Kirby Star Allies won't bring any new fans to the series. It sticks to the tried-and-true gameplay strictures of the franchise for better and worse. Co-op is nice, and the HD visuals do bring Kirby's world to life in a fresh way, but overall this is a totally by-the-book sequel that adds little of value other than a chance to play another Kirby game.

Kirby Star Allies fails to move the series to the next level. Instead, it adds a silly gimmick and does nothing special to stand out against other platformers.

Star Allies represents the height of complacency for the Kirby franchise. It looks fine, plays fine, and barely flirts with anything new until the final boss fight

It's cute, easy to play and nice to look at, but by the end of it, you'll probably be left craving something that pushes back at least the teensiest bit.

Star Allies is a serviceable side-scroller, but Kirby's Switch debut should be more exciting this this snoozer.

All in all, I feel Kirby Star Allies was well worth my time. For $59.99, I got around 16-20 hours out of the game and managed to 100% it. It did have some disappointing features, such as lacking a hidden unlockable final world (a mainstay for the series) and no Hard mode for the Story, but it makes up for it with a lot of variety and even more heart. It’s easily better than Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, but I don’t know if I prefer it to the duo of Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot. The 3DS really did a great job of showcasing the potential of the series, though I do feel this is a step in the right direction for the console games. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll definitely get more out of the game, especially if you play it with friends. But even if you play it solo, Kirby Star Allies is a joyful and entertaining romp in the beloved series. Now for me to just cross my fingers and pray for a Kirby RPG next…

Kirby Star Allies started feeling like a slog for how easy and mundane the adventure felt at times, but despite that I wanted to see myself to the end of it as it does have some neat mechanics with the many possible team formations. I do highly recommend this game for Switch owners that are new to video games.

Kirby Star Allies shines as a standout multiplayer platformer for the Switch, and one that should satisfy the itch of Kirby fans.
