Time Carnage fails to do anything interesting with its gimmick, and thus this is nothing but just another shooting gallery. There's a certain amount of fun to be found in the arcade and challenge modes, but slogging through the campaign to unlock the levels and perks contained within them is a complete borefest.

Time Carnage is far from being an example for other games - due to its repetitive, uninspired nature and dull gameplay, Time Carnage ends up not providing the players with any reasons to enjoy the experience and the result is a game that is easily avoided and whose only main quality is being correctly organized and without bugs.

Time Carnage harks back to the good old days of heading down to the arcade to play House of the Dead or Virtua Cop, where you'd drop a couple of coins into a virtual shooting gallery and kill zombies all evening. While this indie shooter lacks the reliable precision of those light gun classics, it at least offers an enjoyable FPS alternative amid Switch's growing selection.

Time Carnage is a decent enough arcade shooting game, but you can tell it wasn't designed for the Switch.

If you're after a VR game that's fun in small doses but has lots of long-lasting appeal, then it's quite easy to recommend Time Carnage.

Time Carnage delivers a decent shooting experience, but it brings nothing new or exciting to the wave-based shooting genre. It follows the same old formulaic approach of waiting for enemies in one spot, shooting them down, and repeating the process over multiple levels – it’s hardly exciting stuff and with more fleshed out shooters available on the PlayStation VR headset right now, there are simply better games to spend to your time with. The team at Wales Interactive are due some credit for trying to add an interesting premise to the action, but it doesn’t translate to a great game. Sure, there’s fun to be had and gamers who enjoy a wave-based shooter will love Time Carnage, but those who want a more varied shooting experience that does something a bit more unique will be better off looking elsewhere.

The time continuum shift mechanic has been done before, but it's the first time VR has taken the concept by the scruff. It's action-packed, frantic, makes you feel like a real badass and is just a joy to experience. A great reason to hold on to those Move controllers.

Time Carnage is a surprisingly good wave-based PSVR shooter with a lot going for it. From the clever load-out selection in-game to the brilliant multi-period merging arcade mode, I had a blast playing this game. The large selection of weapons and the constant introduction of new, harder enemies kept the game fresh and builds up the challenge gradually. The fuzzy PSVR graphics, the lack of precise 3D sound and the lacklustre enemy AI do let the game down a little, but they never infringed on my enjoyment. If you have a PSVR and enjoy these types of games then I highly recommend it. Who doesn't love shooting rapid dogs in the face with a shotgun whilst watching their bodies float off in zero gravity?

Time Carnage VR has some truly exceptional moments. Staring down hordes of spiders, raptors and mutants with two mini guns in an abandoned street is cool and fun in the best kind of way. However the repetitive gameplay in the Campaign really drags the package down. If the campaign’s levels had been half the length this would have been an excellent content package. Instead the repetitiveness of the gameplay will really turn you away from the rest of the brilliant content.

Finishing off with the gameplay I think what’s critical is what you’re looking for. This isn’t a terribly smart or nuanced experience, it’s about making effective use of your guns and being smart about which ones you roll with. You should ideally have a mix of single-shot heavy hitters and continuous fire so you’re equipped for both bruisers and smaller more nimble foes. Keep an eye out for time disruptions you can shoot to temporarily slow down time as well as explosive barrels to use strategically and you can have some fun with the ridiculousness of it all for a while. It’s not a game that’ll likely be appealing outside of its niche but given the lack of options on the Switch it’s still a welcome addition to the Switch lineup.

Going from VR to a normal game is not easy, because the effect of surprising you lose on the way. This is what happens to Time Carnage, that what it does it does well, but it is not enough. Once the claim of virtual reality is lost, we are left with a somewhat slow wave shooter in its development, with little variety of game modes and some of these widely wasted. In its favor, it must be said that the four historical settings give rise to a variety of enemies, each with its own patterns and weaknesses, and that the mechanics with the four weapon slots give a certain dynamism and frenzy to the action in the waves. more advanced. It is a game that can be tested, although always before in VR if we have the option.
