The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit Reviews
This standalone entry into Dontnod’s excellent Life is Strange series packs a serious emotional punch, looks fantastic and more than justifies its price tag of absolutely nothing
Want to feel like you're in an Indie movie, perhaps a short film by Zack Braff? The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit should scratch that itch.
An excellent, painfully brief piece of storytelling, with some decent characters and a lot of heart.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is light on actual awesome adventuring, but it certainly has the spirit of Life Is Strange throughout and shows a notable maturity and nuance in its depiction of a troubled household.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a short and sweet jaunt through a young boy's imagination. With simple gameplay but a wide array of puzzles and pieces to discover, you can easily get lost in this game.
The free prologue to Life is Strange 2, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, but is it worth the time investment?
An endearing vignette in the Life is Strange universe that shows what the series is like when it's at its best.
The only problem with Dontnod being so good at what they do is that, sometimes, they're a little too good.
If The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit cost a bit of money, we'd still highly recommend it. The fact that it's totally free means it's elevated to a must-play, even if you have no plans on playing Life Is Strange 2 - and if you're considering it, play this now. Any minor quibbles we might have, like some interactive points not being obvious, drop away when you remember that it's free.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is an impressive accomplishment, which is made even more impressive when you consider the fact that it does everything that it does in the space of just a couple of hours. On top of that, the fact that it's completely free makes it a ridiculously easy game to recommend.
Fans of the series will play this and find themselves completely relieved of any lingering concerns that they may have had that Max and Chloe are no longer the focus of the series, with Captain Spirit proving the Life is Strange universe - and Dontnod's on mastery over this kind of storytelling - is bigger then just the original protagonists.
A worthy (and free) successor to Life is Strange, and an intriguing teaser for the full sequel. Dontnod have improved on most accounts and look to draw in new fans with this prologue.
The demo may only take a few hours to complete everything there is to see, but The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a fantastic introduction to Life is Strange 2. Thanks to new mechanics and abilities It changes the way you approach the game and I have a feeling the best is yet to come. Either way, we know now we’ll be hearing more from Chris and Captain Spirit and that can only be a good thing.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit efficiently sets the stage for Life is Strange 2 with more player choices, more object interactions, and more secrets to uncover than ever before despite its short length.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is an easy recommendation for Life is Strange fans as well as for those who have never touched the series before. Clocking in at 90 minutes, the episode can easily be completed in a single sitting; the episode's characters, on the other hand, will stay with you long after you put down the controller. If you have a free afternoon and some space on your hard drive, you have no excuse: Give Captain Spirit a whirl. It's free.
This inventive tale can be uplifting one minute and disheartening the next, but it strikes a consistent and compelling tone
After Dontnod's ambitious but deeply flawed Vampyr, it's great to see them return to form with Captain Spirit. E3 is a whizbang explosion of PR hype for huge titles sporting adrenaline-pumping action. In the midst of all that, it was easy to miss Captain Spirit's heartfelt trailer about childhood wonder. But this free title is a must play.
Chris is like the person who, we fans of video games and comic books, always loved to be. A child who flew over the boundaries of adults reality, A child who was never born.
