Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary is a worthwhile remake of the classic Sierra point-and-click adventure game. However, big-time fans of the original will most likely dislike some aspects of the newer incarnation.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father holds up remarkably well after two decades, but loses some of its soul in this HD remake.

Gabriel Knight is a game best thought of in the past tense. It works the second the game is finished and becomes a highlight reel. The pulp plot briskness, with the seared-in mood acquired from wandering in circles. The moment-to-moment frustrations fade. That's why playing the 20th Anniversary remake of Gabriel Knight broke that spell again.

Unless you're allergic to pixel art or Tim Curry makes you violently ill, you're better off experiencing the original than this competent-but-sterile 20th anniversary remake.

This remake of the legitimately classic Gabriel Knight takes a few missteps, but succeeds in putting the 90s adventure in contemporary digital hands.

There's a famous Doug Larson quote that goes: "Nostalgia is a file that removes the rough edges from the good old days" Unfortunately for Gabriel Knight's 20th Anniversary Edition, the lead character himself - much like his dated wit - isn't sharp enough to carry this off.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is a good point and click adventure game, and its 20th Anniversary Edition is a very bad port. Technical issues abound, the high-definition graphics look far worse than their DOS forebears, and nearly every change that's been made is for the worse.

It is superior to the original game at a glance, and I believe it's a strong game in its own right.

This is almost a director's cut of the game; it is just a shame that the voice acting and some of the dated elements let it down so much.

What it ultimately comes down to is this: Although it suffers from some of Phoenix Online Studios' usual technical issues, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition is a perfectly valid way to experience one of the best point & click adventure games of the 90s.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers - 20th Anniversary Edition is the same great game that won over adventurers two decades ago, complete with shiny new visuals, enhanced sound and some interesting bonus features. This a remake done right and the care and attention that has been invested in it will delight existing fans - hopefully winning over some new ones, too.
