Code of Princess EX really doesn't take itself seriously, but you should. Though not all of the 50+ characters are worth maxing out, the eight heroes of the campaign and the unlockable bosses are an absolute joy to play, learn, and master. With so many modes and so many quests, this is yet another quality Switch title ready to suck up dozens of hours of your life.

Code of Princess EX is a wonderful remaster of an already great game. The rebalancing of enemies and heros makes it easier to pick up and play and the ability to play on a TV makes the HD graphics really pop. If you had missed this on the 3DS, and are a fan of anime, do yourself a favor and pick this title up.

It would be nice to see the world of Code of Princess explored in greater depth in the context of a more narrative-driven experience. There's enough material there for a "proper" JRPG, and the characters are certainly an appealing, amusing bunch.

While lacking in some areas, Code of Princess EX is a solid enhanced port that keeps all of the goofy charm and adds some performance improvements to the final package. This is one adventure beat-em-up fans should look at if they want a solid and humorous experience.

Code of Princess EX is pleasantly playable, finally fluid compared to the 3DS version, and the combo fans will find a very flexible game system. Unfortunately, it is also repetitive to the bone, and the visual impact on a big TV screen doesn't look so great.

With the newly added co-op campaign mode, higher definition visuals, higher framerates, and plenty more additions, Nicalis has breathed new life into an oft-forgotten title. Just make sure you prepare yourself for the inevitable bout of 'Nintendo thumb'.

If you're a fan of the original, you'll likely enjoy the minor tweaks and upgrades on offer, but don't dive in expecting a 'remaster'. You get couch co-op and a healthy framerate, although it doesn't look great on a TV and the original's excellent English voiceover is AWOL. Despite modest enhancements, the 3DS origins of this six-year-old game are plain to see, which may put off newcomers. It's a solid hack-and-slash experience, as it always was – we just wish it did more to earn that 'EX' addendum.

Code of Princess EX is currently the definitive version of Code of Princess and is a must play for anyone who is a fan of retro arcade style beat ‘em ups, especially if they can appreciate a game that doesn't take itself too seriously.

In the end, Code of Princess EX manages to combine all three styles rather well. The unique combination of genres certainly make it an interesting experience. Players looking for a good co-op experience can certainly enjoy this game.  If you're looking for a solid beat-em-up – or even a change of pace to the usual stage-to-stage fighting style – this one is worth checking out.

This game isn’t going to offer you a great combat system but there is an impressive cast of playable characters. The writing is solid and the art style is captivating, however, the quest-based mission design is a major flaw that hinders the potential of the story.

Code of Princess EX is a beat 'em up of a different breed. More bite sized stages and scenarios mean that the action ends right when it ramps up, but the characters and story are what will likely entice players to keep going. This one is more for anime fans than the average gamer.

Code of Princess EX is an entertaining beat-em-up game that is simple enough that anyone can jump in. Even though the boss battles can be tedious and the graphics aren’t as polished as they could be, it’s still an adventure of decent caliber.

All in all, I felt Code of Princess EX was a big improvement over the 3DS game of years ago. The improved graphics and framerate really make this feel like a different game and there is plenty of content there to keep you bashing enemies for hours. I think my biggest problem with this title is still the same though. The combat just feels really stiff at times and the CPU controlled opponents always seem to have an edge in hitting you before you can strike them. Some may think this one is a bit overpriced at the $49.99 for the physical edition, but I have to tell you, Nicalis put a lot of love into it. It comes with reversible cover art, full color manual and a mini OST, so I feel like it is well worth the price. This game is by no means a bad game, but I still feel like it could use more polish. I really hope Nicalis decides to make a full on sequel to this. Based on how much better this is than the original, that would be something to behold. It took about 6 hours to complete the main quest and I spent a ton of time messing around with the characters I unlocked in the other modes. If you didn’t like the original release, there is nothing here that will change your mind. However, If you loved this on the 3DS or are a hard core fan of beat-em-ups, then it would be well worth picking up.

I'm not going to sugar-coat things and try to sell this as a game that everyone can enjoy, but Code of Princess EX does what it does very well. If the $40 price-tag is causing you to pump the brakes, and the gameplay footage you've seen doesn't appeal to you, then pump those brakes, dude! Wait for a sale if you want to, but do keep this on your radar. Whether playing solo, online, or locally with friends, you're guaranteed a bizarre and deceptively deep RPG beat 'em up that's more fun than it has any right to be.

All games in this genre struggle to varying degrees with “the grind”, and throwing out a bunch of options of who to fight with was definitely the focus in this title...

While I do feel that playing through this entire game is worth it just for the comical story, it does drag a lot and it is better to play in small doses that to just hunker down in your favorite recliner and waken to the sound of you Switch Pro Controller. The game just doesn’t have a compelling enough battle sequence to join the ranks of much better RPG games on the market.

Code of Princess EX is a decent beat 'em up but it's nowhere near as good as Guardian Heroes which is clearly the game that it was inspired by.

This game that promises to be the ultimate version of the previous Code of Princess does not fully respond to expectations, especially as far as the quality of the visual environment is concerned but despite that, the variety of characters and movements involved is still something to be happy about.

Code of Princess EX just doesn't seem to scratch that itch for the beat 'em up style that I grew up with. Despite the story being engaging and the characters being wonderfully colorful, the stale and disengaging gameplay just brings it down so far. This makes me sad because Code of Princess EX could have been a proper remaster instead of a port with enhanced graphics. Consider the boat fully missed.
