Critic Reviews for State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem

State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem is a decent twin-stick shooter that more or less works in function and fun, but has many setbacks that prevent it from being anything other than a middling affair. It's certainly not a bad way to get some light arcade action, but you'll hardly feel like you've mastered any mayhem by the end.

The shoot'em up and run and gun enthusiasts will fall in love with the aesthetics of the game. Fun and simple.

State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem is a fun arcade-style release with more than enough variety to keep you entertained from start to finish. The gameplay cycle might be a bit repetitive for some, but the change from on-foot missions to driving a car to chase a UFO to the rest of the stuff you do before defeating a boss and carrying on keeps you busy at a steady pace. How your main weapon and your special weapon also change as you progress will force you to rethink your strategy, and when you get to the end, you might want to do it all over again in Hard mode where the challenge ramps up considerably.

State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem seems like a bit of classic GTA mixed up with a teenager's notebook drawing. It's cool, but not great.

State of Anarchy is worth considering if you’re looking for a smaller game to play in short bursts. It’s a fun time killer, but there’s not a lot of depth here. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – sometimes you just want to zone out and shoot everything that moves.

State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem is an aesthetically pleasing top-down shooter with a cartoony look to it. It’s all about knocking down rioters, blasting aliens, bringing down giant spaceships, and destroying buildings, yet it’s all done in a narrative-less game which looks like it’s been drawn on a piece of paper. Although the game doesn’t vary too much in terms of its gameplay, as it really only has three different segments of play-styles, it does mix things up with new weapons and abilities being given to you almost every level.

The challenge of making due with what you get (there’s no ability to change weapons aside from alternating from the 2 you currently possess) I suppose helps to keep up some variety...
