It’s amazing to think how far Fire Pro Wrestling has traveled. What started as a PC-Engine game back in 1989 with Combination Tag, it continues to thrive and flourish in a market where only one wrestling game sits atop the mountain each year.

My experiences with Fire Pro Wrestling World were so different compared to other wrestling games and it was very welcomed. After doing the tutorial and understanding the game’s mechanics, I was captured into wanting to play for hours straight. There might be some hiccups with lag and frame drops but the fun factor keeps going. It’s safe to say that Fire Pro Wrestling World did indeed win the IWGP Championship title.

Fire Pro Wrestling World is a refreshing alternative to the dour realism of the WWE 2K series and a game that will threaten to consume you if you can overcome its crazy learning curve.

Fire Pro Wrestling World is a whole lot of fun and will definitely appeal to hardcore wrestling fans looking for a video game to satiate the craving of a WWE alternative.

Fire Pro Wrestling World is a hardcore wrestling game made for hardcore wrestling fans. While it’s simply a tonne of fun, it also welcomes creativity and strategy, its rich gameplay making it a wrestling toy box that feels brimming with limitless potential. There’s a lack of variation and an intimidating learning curve, but it’s easy to look over these missteps when Fire Pro Wrestling World ticks so many boxes.

Minor camera/control niggles aside, there’s very little here I can moan about. It’s essentially the most open-ended wrestling sim you could ever want, and its creation tools along with the fully customisable licensing ensures there’s more than enough here to ensure you’re never going to get bored. How can you when the game essentially never ends?

Fire Pro Wrestling World has a number of minor, but noticeable flaws in its execution. What saves it from a death-by-a-thousand-cuts scenario is that the creation options and the gameplay (mostly the gameplay) are simply too fun to rate this game anything below above average. While the PC version can be and has been modded to hell and back, the PS4 version is a solid option with a dedicated, creative community behind it. The base game’s asking price is $50, with the season pass for extra content down the line costing another $50. Even without the season pass I’ve more than gotten my fill, clocking in over 35 hours and counting across the whole game. Either tap into that fighting spirit or, as Taka Michinoku says, “Just! Tap! Out!”

Fire Pro Wrestling World wants to bring to PC and PS4 the definitive experience of this historic franchise. Unfortunately it is a title that is not aimed at all lovers of fighting games, but only towards those who appreciate the dynamics and style designed by Human Entertainment almost thirty years ago.

Lacking the budget and visibility of the more mainstream WWE titles, there's a risk that Fire Pro Wrestling World will get overlooked, at least here in the west. But give it a chance and you'll discover an addictive, accomplished wrestle-fest that will have you grappling for hours at a time.

With a learning curve that mixes well challenge and reward, a very fun story mode, a fantastic creation suite and a great variety of match styles to keep you coming back, Fire Pro Wrestling is one of the best games this sport has ever seen.

Above all else, Fire Pro Wrestling World presents a level of freedom not often seen in videogames. Dedicated players have every opportunity to craft their own wrestling experience. Whether this experience adheres strictly to well-known promotions or something wholly unique is up to them. Anyone seeking a solidly crafted and entertaining experience won't be disappointed, either. The action is soundly compelling, and there's enough depth to stick around for the long term. It's also worth taking the time to explore both the Mission and Scenario modes, as they really add a lot of flavour to this excellent wrestling game.

Fire Pro Wrestling World is a game for anybody that wants a good time. Though best enjoyed with friends, the progression and cast of characters seen in the single player mode kept me gripped throughout, and will likely grip me again should I come back to it in future.

Fire Pro Wrestling World is a love letter to professional wrestling, but only to the most hardcore of hardcore fans. If you enjoy the deep customization suite – despite the lack of efficiency that has plagued the series, something that WWE 2K aims to fix in WWE 2K19 – and the opportunity to have nearly one-thousand created wrestlers in your game, you'll find hours of enjoyment baked into the action. However, if you're looking for something accessible, quick to get into for a quick match or two, search elsewhere.

Just as deep as its creation tools is its gameplay, allowing you to create a moveset that fits your playstyle. It is unfortunate that Fighting Road isn't as great as it could have been but it does give you the option to play a narrative-driven experience that, at the very least, will provide you with a few laughs. For anyone who has the patience, Fire Pro Wrestling World is a game that will appease any pro wrestling fan.

In an era when so many other wrestling games continue to focus on style over substance, a legendary Japanese franchise returns to remind its rivals of how things should be done. While Fire Pro Wrestling World isn't without room for fixes or improvements, it's still by far the best video game wrestling experience to arrive in recent memory. It's been 12 years since the last proper Fire Pro game, but it was absolutely worth the wait.

Ultimately, Fire Pro Wrestling World is just the best wrestling game I've played in years. It's also a perfect fit for the PS4, with its arcade-style input commands right at home on the DualShock 4. If you want to play a wrestling game on the PS4, there's only one option, and Fire Pro Wrestling World might be set to have art imitate life and experience the same kind of global renaissance that NJPW is experiencing.

If you are a fan of wrestling, even a casual one, you will surely end hooked up to the challenge that Fire Pro Wrestling World represents. Even having a game in the West with the license of the NJPW will be, for many, a reason of purchase. It is far from being a perfect game, but it is really enjoyable and justifies the cult around it.
