Despite some problems, Guacamelee! 2 is still entertaining and enjoyable to the end. The game follows the same successful formula as the previous version, and with a series of upgrades, it has become a complete and nearly flawless title that can easily satisfy the fans of Metroidvania genre

Guacamelee! 2 contains everything I loved from the first iteration and builds upon the foundation. DrinkBox Studios kept the elements that worked so well in the game, like platforming, combat, visuals, and great music.

Of all the platformer games in the industry, there are few games with the essence of the old games that catch the player, both for its history and gameplay.

Guacamelee! 2 is a fantastic, almost flawlessly designed and well-paced action platformer, complete with charm, humour and heart. It builds upon the first game brilliantly, making Juan's latest adventure just as thrilling and hilarious as I'd have hoped.

Guacamelee 2 gets lost trying to be too edgy, too funny and referential, falling into the pitfalls it tries to mock. Fun combat and smooth platforming lose their energy when you don't unlock any more abilities and end up doing exactly what you did in the first game.

Guacamelee! 2 is just as good as its predecessor. Thanks to its challenging yet fair difficulty, it encourages playing continuously for hours.

Guacamelee 2 is a nifty little Metroidvania that flies by despite being packed with stuff to do. It cuts straight to the good stuff and keeps things continually moving to create an engaging, succinct playthrough. The tricky traversal and tight, purposeful level design account for some wonderful platforming that feels worthwhile regardless of how tough it gets. On the other hand, however, the story belittles itself to a nagging extent, the sights and sounds are indistinguishable from the last game, and there are more than a few more little annoyances I have with Guacamelee 2, but they’re not enough to hold it down. Any issues I have here are much easier to look past than the much more explicit successes that make Guacamelee 2 a great time.

The game actually puts more of a central focus on combat than a lot of Metroidvanias, too, with new areas often making you stop for a Lucha battle your first time through. These little combat challenges test various skills, from basic brawling to dealing with aerial foes to turning environmental hazards to your advantage. But where things get interesting, in my mind, is when you compare this to the first game. Because, see, I really liked the first Guacamelee. I thought it was a solid little game, but its single biggest problem was that it was slight and brief, over before I was done with it and kind of too easy for most of the experience. None of that is true in the sequel. Oh no. It starts off nice and low and lets you get used to things, but even early on, you've got these little optional challenge rooms to collect heart or mask pieces(for health and stamina, respectively) that give a real solid chunk of platforming to chew on. And the very last dungeon stands out as just plain brutal at times.

If you played Guacamelee, get 2. If you haven't played either, get 1 and 2, and play them in order. Unless you're one of THOSE people... then just get 2, because it is the superior specimen of the two titles.

Guacamelee! 2 is more like a nicely reunion with the old characters whom we know, as the new ones aren't that interesting. So if you intend to play this series, you MUST play the first installment first.

Guacamelee! 2 like its predecessor is a must-buy game for every Metroidvania fan. The platforming part is well-made and the changing between living and dead world and also human and roster-form, make interesting challenges which are sometimes very hard. Combat mechanics are also well-implemented but most fighting arenas are mostly identical and feel the same in terms of level design. But after all, If you want a great colorful fun metroidvania game, Guacamelee! 2 is for you.

This sequel offers rock-solid platforming, funny dialogue, and addicting-as-ever Metroidvania mechanics. It’s challenging, rewarding and full of spunk. I recommend it as a must play for anyone who likes platformers, co-op titles, and of course, Metroidvania games.

Guacamelee! 2 is a great sequel that manages to carry over everything that worked in the first game while offering a fun, zany new story for players to discover. The Nintendo Switch port brings the added bonus of portability and makes short play sessions possible for on the go players. Local co-op can be a bit rough if only using the Joy-cons but this is hardly a deal breaker. If you haven't picked up Guacamelee! 2 yet I highly recommend picking it us on the Switch as it offers everything the other consoles do with the perks of mobility.

When Guacamelee 2 does so many things right, from the wonderfully tight and responsible gameplay to the downright gorgeous look and feel of the Mexiverse, it's hard to not talk about it without gushing. But it's earned that right, delivering a top-tier experience across the board. It captures the essence of multiple genres and blends them brilliantly within a visually stunning world that's equally as fun to explore as it is to stare at.

A dazzling, thrilling action-platformer with a potent cocktail of combat and platforming components, all set in one of the most appealing game worlds around. It's not a massive progression from the original, and its sheer relentlessness can prove tiresome, but Guacamelee! 2 is a real celebration of a sequel.
