For 50 euros, this is a below-average title that is nowhere near the quality of its competitors. It offers average to below average graphics, a terrible driving model, unbalanced difficulty and a lot of frustration. Better reach for the Dirt series from Codemasters or WRC from the same studio as today's V-Rally 4. On the other hand, someone may be pleased with Split Screen, which does not compensate for the shortcomings of this game.

While hours of racing can be enjoyed, this will eventually wear quite thin pretty fast.

I was looking forward to what the V-Rally franchise would bring with its comeback but was disappointed to see dated graphics and harsh controls holding back a once revered series.

On paper V-Rally 4 sounds like it should deliver everything you’d want for a rally racer. It has a lengthy single player, plenty of tracks and environments and a decent sized list of cars to tinker with in the garage. Unfortunately what the game does manage to get right is quickly dampened by some rather glaring and unforgivable flaws.

V-Rally 4 is an old-school rally game at heart, for better and worse (but mainly the latter). If you stick with it you'll eventually start to master and enjoy it, but the slippery handling and unforgiving ‘no mistakes allowed' rally races make getting to that point a real slog. On top of this, its numerous performance issues are so severe that they aren't just ugly, they're downright distracting: the result being that although this is now the best rally game on Switch by default, pretty much every aspect of it leaves acres of room for improvement.

V-Rally had a lot of potential which it just didn't live up to.

V-Rally is back. But it's way behind the Dirt-Series. The career isn't very motivating, also the handling of the cars isn't very good. But V-Rally 4 has its moments. The races are fun, but not very realistic.

Kylotonn still didn't deliver a DiRt Rally Killer, however, it is a consistent development from the experience of the recent WRC parts. Although there are some things that take some getting used to, such as the oversensitivity of the controls and the gruesome soundtrack, the substance is very motivating and well-implemented. The various event types bring the necessary variety in the gameplay and thus provide the necessary long-term motivation. Also, the online modes make fun to compete in the races asynchronously against other players. In any case, V-Rally 4 is a successful continuation of the V-Rally series.

V-Rally 4 is suffering from a mid-life crisis and appears to be confused with what it wants to be. As an Arcade racer, there is too many adjustments and options you must go through in order to tweak your vehicle, as a simulator there isn’t enough depth and customisations to satisfy you. In terms of content, 22 regions with up to five tracks per region and a variety of weather and time options is a lot of content to keep you occupied for hours, not to mention it’s online and local split-screen multiplayer. However, until you obtain the best cars with all their upgrades, you’ll be spending more time getting accustomed to the slippy nature of each vehicle than actually enjoying yourself.

Overall, V-Rally 4 is quite a decent experience that is no blemish on the legacy of the old series. It's pleasing on the eye, features a good amount of discipline contrast, and the split-screen multiplayer is great fun. Fans of the series will feel at home with the handling model, which recaptures the feel and behaviour of the original in a new modern context with surprising success. It's not a sim-heavy experience, but it is an appropriate challenge that asks more of the player than the average arcade rally affair does. The car list is lacking in terms of modern options, but existing fans will have a soft spot for the classics on offer. It's just a shame that the career mode fails to distinguish itself, and the online multiplayer is sparsely populated. Any future iterations will need to be more inventive, but V-Rally 4 is a surprisingly fun throwback.

This is a bizarre game. There’s very little redeeming qualities with V-Rally 4, but there’s still something about it that kept me coming back as quickly as I kept putting it down. V-Rally 4 does well to emulate what came before it, but does nothing to make the resurrection worth it, or the wait. The only thing consistent is the inconsistency. There’s far better rally games out there, but if you’ve played them all, I can see some enjoyment with V-Rally 4 after you take the time to learn its quirks and nuances that are honestly not worth the trouble.

In a genre that has its fair share of challengers, V Rally 4 comes in dead last thanks to its bipolar handling, meagre selection of tracks and a modest grab bag of disciplines that fails to excite any fan of dirty racing.

V-Rally 4 features a lot of exhilarating moments that make it one of the most engaging racers I've ever played. A decent selection of disciplines and beautiful graphics make this a good pick-up for any casual off-road racing fan.

Ultimately, V-Rally 4 is a solid if comprehensively unremarkable rally racing game. It offers neither the simulation depth of Dirt Rally nor the arcade racing hijinks of Dirt, straddling the line somewhere between the two. It can be moderately entertaining despite its dry personality, but up against stiff competition, it's an all too forgettable entry. Perhaps V-Rally was best left in its nostalgia-fuelled haze.

V-Rally 4 might not be as significant as it was back when the last entry hit but for a rally racer it's still pretty good.

V-Rally 4 isn't the triumphant return the series' fans were hoping for, but it's not irredeemable. Sadly, it's slightly above average at best and that's just not enough. A famous name isn't everything.

There are plenty of great moments to be had and the racing, at times, is first class. After such a long break it’s great to have V-Rally back. Hopefully we don’t have to wait as long for the next one.

The 4th installment in V-Rally series is not the sequel that can take the series forward. In total, there is not a specific mechanic that can be considered as a weakness, but the problem is that there is neither notable improvements nor exciting new features to help the series gain a position among top quality racing titles.

A game where there is fun to be had, but it quickly diminishes and you’re left with an experience that feels as if it should have been preserved in a previous generation.
