All in all, I’ve had a blast playing Megaquarium and the Freshwater Frenzy DLC. The DLC will be a welcome addition for those who already own the main game, bringing new types of fish for them to keep. For newcomers to the game like myself, you will find a brilliant management simulation game with an interesting subject, just don’t forget to feed the Fish!

Megaquarium is a tycoon/management game for those that like to take things slowly. There’s no running around or avoiding disasters. The most you’ll have to deal with is is some malfunctioning equipment and that’s more of an inconvenience than a stressor. Instead, this is a chill game about a chill topic that lets you get as creative as you can within its constraints and has done some admirably in its journey from PC to PS4. It won’t be for everyone – if you prefer your tycoon games with an element of danger then this one isn’t for you – but if you’re looking to kick back, look at some fish and make sure everything is ticking over while some cool tunes play in the background, this is one to put on your radar.

The game tries to create its own space and it's successful at making something original and with a relaxing environment. The gameplay experience could certainly improve with the use of the Nintendo Switch touch screen and with a more intuitive interface but for an original effort, Megaquarium ticks most of the right boxes.

Megaquarium is a robust management simulation game, and the only one allowing you to build your own aquarium. While PC players have been perfecting their exhibits for quite some time, the transition to consoles has been quite smooth. I thoroughly enjoy how the game operates using a controller, although without going through the tutorial, you may be a bit lost. Many advanced elements slowly creep into the experience, such as ensuring your bigger fish don't eat the smaller ones, properly decorating aquariums to keep skittish fish calm, balancing the amount of a single species to keep them happy.

If you like management and/or simulation games and are fond of fishies, Megaquarium is the game for you! Go wild as you progress from a small-time aquarium builder to Aquaman himself, creating a multitude of massive glass prisons for all your water-based tourist attractions and money-makers. The progression is done really well, unlocking new items and fish to research and obtain as you move through the lengthy campaign – you’ll never feel like you have nothing new to show off or interesting for your paying customers to take advantage of. The stability towards the end of the game is pretty bad, but it never affected my enjoyment as it only became an ‘issue’ in the very final mission of the final level.

Megaquarium is a nice and smooth management game where you have to develop and construct your own aquarium. You start off with a little plot of land that only resides of a small amount of space and an entrance for the guests. The tutorial is a nice way to get you started, walks you through the process, the UI, the goals and more. Now the game is split into two different modes, campaign and sandbox. I would seriously recommend the campaign first because it introduces you to a nice learning curve. You start off with a nice small aquarium and have access to the basic equipment to work with. The game just eases you in at the right pace because there is a bit more to the game than just making a tank and putting fish inside it. It shows you how to build the tank, add in the essential extras like the filters and the feeders that every fish tank needs. Even things like heaters and tool stations that your staff are going to need to efficiently. It is really refreshing to play a campaign that teaches you the ways to play the game and how to use the tools and facilities provided for you to be successful in making a great aquarium.

Megaquarium for the Switch is an enjoyable theme park builder suitable for entry level and experts of the genre. Those with aquarium experience will find a lot to love here. It is, however, best suited for dock mode only.

WORTH CONSIDERING - Megaquarium offers up a robust and well-researched fish and aquarium sim to players. You’ll have a blast expanding out the aquarium of your dreams. However, the complexity of the game is a bit high and it’s not always clear why certain behaviors are happening. It’s not the most visually appealing game, but there’s a whale-load of content to experience if you’re willing to give it a shot.

Despite some nitpicks with the visuals in the game Megaquarium is a great addition to any tycoon fan’s library. The transition to console feels natural and great thanks to an intuitive control scheme and the game will keep you busy with a huge variety of aquatic life and items to grow your aquarium with.

I really enjoyed Megaquarium, I found it refreshing to take on the challenge of designing and managing my own aquarium and it took me right back to my childhood roots. There has clearly been a lot of love and attention given to the game mechanics as well as the background understanding for each of the various marine species. Will I ever get to Megaquarium status? Watch this space! I award Megaquarium the Thumb Culture Platinum Trophy!

A charming management game that's designed entirely for your convenience. Very easy to learn, with enough complexity to keep you entertained for hours.

From cute, but overly simplistic visuals to fish behavior being off and getting caught on the decorative items, it feels like what it really is: a simplified tycoon sim with a lot of heart. It can’t rival the best in the genre, but players can make a pretty awesome aquarium within its constraints, so it ultimately delivers what was promised even if it doesn’t exceed those promises.

Coming in at just under 20 quid this gives pretty good value for money for something that might not have massive content but it still full of intricacy. Right, I’m off to sort out a shark tank!

Megaquarium is a fintastic game to relax and unwind with at the end of a long day. I like to couple that with some of my favorite sushi rolls, but to each their own. Here I am, nine levels later and still having a lot of fun trying to make the best aquarium ever. Sure, nothing I design will ever rival the Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest aquarium and one I have been to a few times, but that doesn't mean I'll stop trying. There's only one more level for me to tackle, and my fingers are crossed that I can finally get some dolphins to do elaborate hoop routines while whistling the US national anthem for me.

A few niggles aside, Twice Circled should be very proud of its charming simulation game. Although its graphics are simplistic, the game speaks for itself with its entertaining gameplay. Once you get the hang of all its systems, Megaquarium is a lot of fun. If you enjoy management sims, I guarantee that you’ll lose numerous hours in designing your dream aquarium.

There’s a great business management experience here; the gameplay may seem shallow at first blush, but plunge a little deeper and you’ll find plenty of depth.

While Megaquarium is fun and challenging at times, it tends to become a little repetitive after a while. A few more different challenges would help, while at other points it would have been nice to see an overview panel to make it easier to organise things. The gameplay can easily get messy, which is a shame considering the idea and the colourful setup. Nevertheless, the game is enjoyable and relaxing, and a player may well find themselves playing for hours.

Megaquarium is a fun and enthralling tycoon game. I found there to be a deep amount of depth to each tanks ecosystem and the requirements to bring in more guests. As I mentioned earlier, any other game would have probably just had the player pick a tank of fish and mainly focus on your patron's happiness. But Megaqquarium brings the micromanagement of an actual fish tank to your computer screen. As the team continues to make improvements, leading to an overall better experience, they’re creating more fun along the way. Fun that doesn’t require you to murder a million fish, but to take care and nurture them.
