Project Warlock is an admirable shotgun blast from the past, but it doesn't really have an identity of its own.

Project Warlock is just a damned blast. You could say this is the best version of Wolfenstein 3D ever made. Hell, it even tops the original Doom in some categories. It certainly won't win awards for originality, but this is a true work of passion that pays off in the end.

Project Warlock's speedy gunplay, rockin' soundtrack, and armory of slick weapons combine in a way that make it a bit more than a repeat of past Dooms and results in a game that's bigger than the sum of its many recognizable parts.

Project Warlock is a Doom-like that packs a punch. The levels are full of secrets, the enemies have a great range of behaviours, and the weapons – boy, the weapons – are a joy to use. Add all of that to the 60 levels to learn and explore and the challenges provided by the higher difficulty levels and you have a winning formula. Even if the pixel graphics aren't your usual cup of tea, Project Warlock is more than worth your time. This is a journey to Hell that is well worth the ride.

Project Warlock is a real delight; impeccably put together, looks fantastic, and feels great to play. Some niggles over high difficulty at the beginning and a clunky radial menu but retro fans will be delighted.

Project Warlock is a fast-paced, fun and challenging old-school FPS, with a hint of RPG mechanics.

Project Warlock is the little obliterating shooter that could. Someone so inspired by classic games took their love of the genre and created a fantastic monument to the source material while still offering its own identity.

With five worlds, each with five sub-levels consisting of between one and four stages, as well as a plethora of secrets to find, there’s enough here to keep any FPS fanatic entertained for hours.

A sharp retro shooter with a compelling progression system and satisfying fast-paced combat, Project Warlock is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for an easily accessible blaster which does more than just seek to emulate its classical inspirations.

Project Warlock isn’t going to set the world on fire, but what it sets out to do it does well. I found myself loving certain sections while struggling with others. With a few tweaks it could easily become a fan-favorite title that scratches that itch so many other games attempt and fail at.

Far from being innovative, Project Warlock is a fun shooter combined with some western RPG elements. Not very fortunate during the early years of its project, the young developer Jakub Cislo eventually succeeds to pay hommage to the fast-FPS of the golden era.

Project Warlock is an excellent throwback to the fast-paced, gory strafe-fests of the '90s. It's got tons of big, meaty weapons, magic attack abilities, some light puzzle elements and an endless procession of freakish hellspawn to blow into tiny chunks across five impressively varied settings. Buckshot Software's debut effort is an easy recommendation for retro FPS fans and one of the better shooter experiences currently available on Switch.

Project Warlock is a fun, affordable ($14.99 USD) homage to a bygone era of first-person shooters that did not hold your hand and only allowed you to progress after you earned it. Fast-paced gameplay, tight, secret-filled levels, a fitting soundtrack, and sprite-based graphics all add up to a game that feels ripped from another era, while introducing a few ideas of its own to keep things fresh. Some balancing issues and an occasionally-glitchy weapon wheel hardly detract from what is ultimately a modern blast from the past.

Project Warlock has its moments, but the retro good comes with some nostalgic bad. If you're able to look past its flaws, there's a chunky and satisfying first-person shooter that still manages to be a blast from the past when you get to grips with it.

All in all, though, Project Warlock is a reminder of the retro FPS with just a smidge of RPG elements thrown in. The title has a wonderful aesthetic, fantastic music, and enjoyable gameplay. While there are a number of little things that annoy me, it's unique enough to get a recommendation. Buy it if you grew up loving Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, or especially Hexen.

Project Warlock is a first-person shooter created by a tiny indie team that punches way above its weight. While its reason for existence may initially seem to be for paying homage to its genre's forefathers, Project Warlock quickly grows into a game all its own, providing an enthralling shooter experience all the way to the end.

In the end though, perhaps what sets apart Project Warlock from the very recent old-school shooter renaissance we've been seeing is that outside of inspiration and certain elements it doesn't look any one thing from the '90s. Which in the end makes it special, and something well worth checking out.

Despite all that, Project Warlock still does an excellent job of not wasting the player's time similar to the 90s retro FPS we're used to. Right from the start, the game doesn't prompt any tutorials, just some weapons, and some demons to kill, making it feel like a proper Doom clone. To support this is its stellar Rockin soundtrack and art design that bears a resemblance to classic Minecraft.  All in all, Project Warlock is a respectable and enjoyable Doom clone. While it has some balancing issues to work out, it's still a must-have for fans of the retro FPS genre.

Project Warlock is a FPS that pays homage to classic '90s shooters like Doom. If you like mazes filled with hardcore monsters and plenty of gore, this game will probably be of interest to you.
