The HD version of Onimusha: Warlords is reminiscent of the wave of remasters that hit the PS3/360 era, which served as a passable way to introduce players to popular games from the previous generation. Rather than taking the route of the stellar Resident Evil HD Remaster, Capcom has put out a version of Onimusha that is easily accessible to a current audience and seems to act as a way to gauge player interest for the future of the franchise.

Onimusha: Warlords is short, and the remasted version doesn't expand any new playable content. But it does a good job in terms of improving graphics performance and control. What's more, even in 2019, the battle system is still gorgeous, and it definitely is a must-buy game for the fans.

Onimusha was the basis for many hack & slash games, unfortunately the first installment of the series was OK but it lacks a lot of elements that would have enriched the player’s experience. Capcom should have release the first three installments to show the greatness this series have reached with time but that unfortunately didn’t happen.

Onimusha: Warlords is a lazy remaster of an honourable but anachronistic video game. The new control system is a nice addition but we simply expected something more.

With the Remastered of Onimusha: Warlords, Capcom offers old and new players the chance to discover one of the most intriguing action games of the PS2 era. The work done by the development team is good, with a very positive restyling from a technical point of view but a little less good from that of the gameplay, which is particularly affected by the weight of the years and has to deal with structural limits that are decidedly difficult to digest in 2019.

A low budget but competent remaster of a game that's showing its age – and yet still makes a good argument for a future franchise revival.

Onimusha: Warlords is a decent remaster. While its combat remains great and its mechanics solid, some of the graphical upgrades can be hit and miss.

If there's one aspect Capcom has been banking on as of late, it's nostalgia.

Onimusha: Warlords Remastered can feel as dated as you would expect from a PlayStation 2 era title, but Capcom has done a solid job of improving the visuals and reworking the gameplay in order to make it worth revisiting in 2019.

18 years down the line (almost to the day) and Onimusha has returned to store shelves. While its comeback could have been better refined, this is a serviceable remaster with enough bells and whistles to entice veterans and newcomers alike.

Onimusha: Warlords is a worthy remaster, and even though it feels rather short, the combat and exploration of such a claustrophobic world reminds you just how good it is.

Onimusha: Warlords HD Remaster is intended for those looking for a trip down memory lane, but it won't impress others. It's an interesting historical artifact, but that's about all it has going for it. (A true remake would be delightful!) Otherwise, it's just Samurai Resident Evil, and even then, it doesn't stand out much from the crowd. The HD remaster makes it the best-looking version of the game, but it's far from a definitive version. It's a nice trip back in time for those who played the game when it was fresh, but without the shine of being "next-gen," it may not hold a lot of appeal for others.

Revisiting Onimusha: Warlords with this remastered release should be a treat for all fans of the original, while if you've never played it before, it's also an excellent opportunity to experience a classic action title that has aged surprisingly well.

Back in 2001, when Onimusha Warlords first came out, it was a real step forward in the beat'em all genre. Eighteen years later, despite its laughable lenght, the joy of discovery remains the same, especially when it comes to its stunning art direction and the simpleness of its gameplay mechanics. Now, we can only hope for further adaptations of the Onimusha saga.

A remaster of this scope can’t give the game a better camera, liven up the combat, or spruce up the tacky pre-rendered backgrounds. It’s a shame too since somewhere in this game lies a decent core that could serve as a fantastic base for a more fully fledged remake willing to go beyond a simple touch-up.
