Onimusha isn’t a 2019 classic, but it has earned its place as a 2001 classic that’s still more than worth playing today if you’re in the market for good games from bygone eras.

This is actually a decent HD remaster. For a game that I played a ton of when I was 15, it was still fun to go back to with a new set of eyes and experiences under my belt.

Onimusha: Warlords is a classic of the genre, which remains relevant even after almost two decades after the original release. Sadly, Capcom didn't bother to create a remake on the same level as Resident Evil 2, but the game is still good anyway. We recommend you to play it on the Switch in a portable mode.

Onimusha: Warlords Remastered can feel as dated as you would expect from a PlayStation 2 era title, but Capcom has done a solid job of improving the visuals and reworking the gameplay in order to make it worth revisiting in 2019.

Back in 2001, when Onimusha Warlords first came out, it was a real step forward in the beat'em all genre. Eighteen years later, despite its laughable lenght, the joy of discovery remains the same, especially when it comes to its stunning art direction and the simpleness of its gameplay mechanics. Now, we can only hope for further adaptations of the Onimusha saga.

Important classic from the early days of the Playstation 2, which is no longer contemporary, but has a great atmosphere.

New players will get the full, unabridged experience at a decent price, while old fans should find this treasured classic is still just as fun to dive into as they remember.

This remaster seems only well suited for folks who've experienced the series before. It's tailor-made for folks who want to take a trip down memory lane. Even then, you'll find the same surprise I did—that Onimusha: Warlords is a game remembered as being better than it actually was.

Onimusha Warlord may not be the most ambitious survival horror ever made, but its action-based gameplay and combat system, while simple, are enough to capture the player's interest. Thanks to its interesting environment and puzzles, this is a game that becomes enjoyable and entertaining quickly enough, even if its length could certainly be longer.

While the second and third games are arguably better, Onimusha: Warlords serves as a perfect introduction to one of Capcom's most underrated franchises. So many minor improvements have been made here to make the game very playable by modern standards, though the fixed camera angles will remain polarising with modern audiences. Regardless, Onimusha: Warlords is a brief yet rewarding experience that combines simple yet satisfying combat and ghoulish enemy designs to create something that's still unique.

Still thoroughly good fun, Onimusha: Warlords is nonetheless showing its age, and unfortunately doesn't really hold up in 2019. For a fan like me, revisiting Capcom's samurai survival horror is genuinely welcome, but anyone experiencing it for the first time might come away perplexed.

As a whole, the remaster of Onimusha: Warlords is a mixed bag for me. The graphics still look pretty outdated and the fixed camera is a huge annoyance. That being said, it's nice to revisit old games like this because developers don't really make games like this nowadays. It's worth playing since it only costs $19.99, although some people may find the game to be short as most player will complete it in around 4 hours…

The HD version of Onimusha: Warlords is reminiscent of the wave of remasters that hit the PS3/360 era, which served as a passable way to introduce players to popular games from the previous generation. Rather than taking the route of the stellar Resident Evil HD Remaster, Capcom has put out a version of Onimusha that is easily accessible to a current audience and seems to act as a way to gauge player interest for the future of the franchise.

If there's one aspect Capcom has been banking on as of late, it's nostalgia.

Onimusha: Warlords is short, and the remasted version doesn't expand any new playable content. But it does a good job in terms of improving graphics performance and control. What's more, even in 2019, the battle system is still gorgeous, and it definitely is a must-buy game for the fans.

Revisiting Onimusha: Warlords with this remastered release should be a treat for all fans of the original, while if you've never played it before, it's also an excellent opportunity to experience a classic action title that has aged surprisingly well.
