So, with all of that taken into account, is Dead or Alive 6 worth picking up? No. Unless you really (and I mean really) need to know what happens in the next installment of the franchise. Yes, credit where credit is due with the gameplay, roster, and visuals, but everything about the game just has this air of 'lacking' around it. The soundtrack could have done a lot more, most of the design was just plain bad, the story felt thrown together at the last minute, and the length of the campaign just doesn't justify the £54 price tag attached to the game.

Throughout, you may be gripped by the feeling that you've seen all that there is to see in the fighting game genre.

Dead or Alive 6 is not a step forward compared to the previous games in the series, and in some important aspects it completely loses to its predecessor.

DOA6 is a fun game, but it's not really a huge leap from part 5, and it still needs more functions & fan-favourite modes to stand out from other fighting games even from last year. As much fun as it is to kick ass as either Hitomi or that schoolgirl with the multiple moves, the absurd Story Mode isn't enough to pique my interest for more than a few weeks.

The battle system is evolving, with some unique facilities remaining, but Dead or Alive does not seem to be going anywhere, neither in the direction where TeamNinja wants it nor in the direction the we all want it to go.

Unfortunately, That's when I expect it to be eclipsed by a better adversary.

For what it is, Dead or Alive 6 offers an enjoyable experience for new players and veterans alike, but the full package currently fails to deliver in a lot of key areas.

Team Ninja has put together a solid entry into the DOA world. While there is nothing truly groundbreaking here, fans of the genre will find plenty here to sink their teeth (or fists) into and won’t be disappointed. I do think a little more originality with the characters would have made a huge difference (especially as a Tekken fan). I found myself questioning why I would play DOA as a character with a Tekken Move-set, surely I would just play Tekken? Is this a day one ‘must have’? probably not, but if any of you feel like punching a CGI opponent, look this one up.

Dead or Alive 6 is a fun fighting game being held back for the sake of additional profit

Dead or Alive 6 maintains the same excellent fighting engine and graphical fluidity of past entries, but it's bogged down by a litany of problems. From the tedious grinding to unlock costumes to the bare-bones online play, it's a disappointing debut on current-gen consoles.

Dead or Alive 6 finds itself in this slightly awkward middle space where it's certainly a sequel, but it's not nearly the jump that we were expecting -- especially since it's been almost seven years since Dead or Alive 5. The new additions to combat are welcome but they're not exactly exciting, and the overall package is reasonably robust, but let down by tedious grinds and a terrible story mode. As a fighter, Dead or Alive is still fun, punchy, and accessible, but as an upgrade on the already solid Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, it feels underwhelming, and even a little rushed.

While it still makes for a fun fighting experience, Dead or Alive 6 shows that the brand has unquestionably run out of ideas. With little to showcase in the way of fresh concepts, exciting gameplay ideas, or brand creativity, this long-running series chooses to coast by on being "more of the same.", whilst hoping to be the engine that pulls the DLC train. During this competitive era of fighting game reinvention, that just isn't going to cut it for your 60 bucks.

Dead or Alive 6 carries much of the franchise's risque DNA, but shows a bit more initial restraint. The more revealing costumes are unlockable and the jiggle physics tend towards a bit more realism now. Combat remains accessible, but new moves like the Break Blow and evasion add new layers for DOA vets. Dead or Alive 6 could use a little more graphical polish and its netcode needs to be better, but it's a pretty good fighter all around.

A sequel that seems somewhat embarrassed of the series' sexist past and shallow combat but fails to do anything meaningful about either.

DOA 6 is a capable fighting game that will probably entertain hardcore fans of the series. However, it's hard to imagine it adding to its fanbase as it offers nothing that broadens horizons, and fails to provide the sort of depth expected. DOA 6 can be fun in spurts but doesn't have the staying power of some of the elite fighting titles.

Dead or Alive 6 has some of the most polished gameplay in the series, but is let down by poorly implemented half-measures with its other content.

Small additions to gameplay still manage to keep Dead or Alive 6 as a solid alternative in the fighting genre. However, much of its appeal has vanished in order to fit a gargantuan season pass that betrays his collecting soul.

Dead or Alive 6 offers the same fun the previous installments did. There is not a huge leap forward in graphics, but in terms of gameplay there are some fun new elements. Unfortunately the game lacks diversity in multiplayer modes.

Dead or Alive 6 does not represent a revolutionary leap in the franchise and is limited to offer more of the same but with a few new features.
