Bethesda Softworks has done great work reinvigorating its library of IPs over the past few years.

Underneath it all, RAGE 2 is one of the most energetic and frenetic shooters I’ve played since DOOM. But you must, unfortunately, wade through a poorly paced story, a drab open world, and a few locks and progression gates to even experience the best it has to offer. Those who persist will adore RAGE 2, but it’s such a bizarrely inconsistent journey to get there that it’s hard to recommend to everyone.

Rage 2 is an incredibly well-executed combat loop that has been utterly buried by a terrible story, boring and repetitive tasks such as driving and infuriating time sinks such as collectible hunting.

Rage 2 is a satisfying FPS. Even if if the whole weapon and powers' package feel generous in order to fight dozens and dozens of enemies, campaign feels very short, and its world is not what we can call very lively and full of interesting things to do.

The combat of Rage 2 is its saving grace, and depending on how many gibs you're producing it can be a blast. Like a string of neon pink Christmas lights, there are fleeting moments of brilliance, but every moment in between feels dull.

It's hard not to be disappointed in how little use the Wasteland has for you when you're not dealing in lead.

Despite technical hiccups and design choices that slow down the action, Rage 2 still manages to make you feel like a postapocalyptic superhero.

The combat is solid, the game looks great and Rage 2 has enough polish it shines like brand new minted Ranger armour, but the plot is pretty disappointing and nothing we haven’t really seen before.

The only reason you might want to buy Rage 2 right now is the bloody, bright, uncompromising fights with the best shooter mechanics in a while. The rest of the product is buried in the monotonous routine of an open world and a weak plot, and will be forgotten, as the original was, in a few months.

With weapons including a firestorm revolver, the shooting is thrilling and stupendously violent – but the vast post-apocalyptic setting is a letdown

Rage 2 delivers over-the-top, action-packed FPS gameplay that's genuinely fun, but while its combat shines, the rest of the game fails to live up to expectations.

The imaginatively gory firefights are top notch. Too bad that creativity didn't seep into the rest of the experience

The wild, exceptional combat of Rage 2 contends with some of the genre's greats, but it's disappointing that the game's world squanders its potential.

As a first person shooter, Rage 2 has some of the best action of the year but as an open world adventure it squanders everything on a listless story campaign and banal mission design.

RAGE 2 held plenty of potential, but even considering how great the combat is, falls well short of that goal. The sequel is hampered by the same issues that cropped up in the original. The campaign is a non-factor and the open-world needed more life in it. Third time's the charm?

Rage 2 feels like a game from 10 years ago and I'm still not sure whether that's a compliment or an insult. It's certainly not the worst game you'll play, but it's never going to be the best.

More Mad Max than Doom, Rage 2 is well made, but doesn’t have a lasting impact.

It's a game that's definitely worth playing, but it could have been so much better than it really is. For all the vibrant pink and yellow, it's the game equivalent of beige.
