Overall, I had a really good time coming back to the series after the last entry left such a bad taste in my mouth. One might even say, my faith has been Re:Newed. Outside of some technical issues that can easily be patched out, it felt good going back to the start of the franchise with a couple gameplay tweaks. If this is meant to be a preview for how 7Even goes, I can’t wait.

As an action/arena combat game, it’s nothing special. Flashy moves and aerial combat add a fun element to keeping a combo string going. As far as story goes, it’s your standard hyper-anime affair of wacky female ninjas and opposing schools. As far as rudeness and explicit content, you either know what you’re paying for or you’re going to chance it on some mild titillation.

Extra content and a few attractive features in Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal might make it worthwhile if you're a long-time fan of the series. For newer addicts who never played Senran Kagura on Nintendo's handheld, this title is perfect to complete your knowledge of the series.

Despite the plot taking itself much more seriously, Burst Re:Newal is still a Senran Kagura game, which means it still revels in giant bouncing breasts and panty shots. What I’ve said for the other games applies to this one as well: if you’re not averse to these elements, Burst Re:Newal is a hell of a fun time, and the heavier story focus here makes this entry all the more sweeter.

Having entered the title with low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised to find an interesting story and engaging gameplay. The title should appeal to both fans and those who don’t care for the “Fanservice only” style of game that the series appeared to be heading into.

While Senran Kagura: Burst Re:Newal probably isn’t winning any “publicly playable” awards, it definitely isn’t something to cross off your list just for that. So why not give it a try, or at least listen to the awesome soundtrack, and sacrifice yourself to the will of the dance.

I take my hat off for Tamsoft's "Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal", because it's a very fun and sexy third-person slash-em-up. However, the game is far from flawless, and this is the reason why.

Under the fan service and the hard-to-ignore boob jokes, Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is an amazingly fun and catchy title that is one that offers the “pick up and go” experience you might expect. The only downside, the fan service could very well hurt it for many fans who prefer not to play one that has as much fan service like this one has.

So, is Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal worth a look in especially with newer titles which offer more characters and spin-off gameplay (looking at Bon-Appetite and Peach Beach Splash)? Yes, if you’re a fan wishing to relive the handheld glory on the big screen, and wish to own a complete collection (assume the next game in the series converts as well). It is light on characters though which might bother some players expecting more content especially given the £35 price tag. All in, this is fun game to play predominantly for fans of the series. As an introduction to the characters and the premise of the two schools it’s also pretty neat. However, if curiosity gets the better of you as a newcomer then one of the other games Shinovi or Estival Versus offers more content and a cheaper price of entry.

The star of this game is the gameplay, but the cute characters, the humor and fun interactions between them add to it. As long as you don’t mind clothing coming off mid-battle, I’d recommend playing this game.

This is one of the best games in the Senran Kagura franchise. The story here is what started it all and some will find it a bit dark compared to the stories we get today. I loved it back in 2013 and my feelings on it have not changed to this day. These characters are so well written that I felt connected to them and that is why I fell in love with this series to begin with. The fan service is great and it wouldn’t be Senran Kagura without it, but there is a deep, rich story here with amazing girls underneath all that. That has not changed even to this day, even though some of newer titles go much harder on the fan service. The combat in this game is a ton of fun, and if this is one of the best soundtracks in all of gaming. It will take right around 8 hours to complete each squad’s story and there’s a ton of free missions to play with as well. It’s worth every penny of the $39.99 price tag, and if you’ve ever wanted to explore the series for the first time, now is the perfect time to do so. If you’re like me and have loved it since 2013, picking this up is a no brainier.

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is a solid love letter to its burgeoning fanbase. The 3D action gameplay is a huge step above the original’s 2.5D combat. The anime stylized visuals look quite nice, the beat ’em up gameplay provides some bouts of entertainment, and the story is a bit deeper than you’d expect. But what keeps it from being a true recommendation is its repetitive gameplay and all too obvious reliance on boobs, butts, and…well, you know what else. Fans will love it, of course. It’s a remake that caters to them and them only. Everyone else should steer clear of its perverted thrills.

There are games that do genuine sexiness better, and there aren't many out there that have the wild, unbound entertainment value of Senran Kagura.

For me, however, there were too much over-sexualization of the main female characters which eventually warded me off, but if this is what you’re looking for, you’ll have a lot for your money

While offering nothing refreshing to the series, this is a solid remake that brings back the original Senran Kagura with all the bells and whistles to the current generation. There is a good amount of content available for fans but beneath it, the gameplay can get repetitive and the story suffers from an awkward pace.

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal plays it safe with the series' established formula, which is ironic considering these titles are anything but safe. The series has always stuck to its roots and embraced the perverseness that in equal measures repels and attracts gamers, and this entry does little but remind the gaming world that these games exist. Aside from Burst Re:Newal being a ground-up remake, there's surprisingly few innovations to take the series into uncharted territory, but the combat is nevertheless enjoyable, and the story interesting enough to just about support the weaker points of the experience.
